eTA for Sri Lanka
The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is an official travel document that international travelers must obtain before entering Sri Lanka. Introduced in 2012 by the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka, the eTA aims to simplify the process of managing incoming travelers. Unlike traditional visas, the eTA system is entirely online, eliminating the need for visits to consulates or mailing passports.

The Application Process for eTA

Applying for the Sri Lankan eTA is straightforward and convenient. The process is completed online, requiring applicants to fill out a form with personal information, passport details, and travel plans. After the application is submitted, the approval is usually received within 24 to 48 hours. It's important to note that the eTA must be obtained prior to arrival in Sri Lanka. It's recommended to apply at least one week before the planned travel date to allow ample time for processing.

Validity and Conditions of the eTA

Once granted, the eTA for Sri Lanka is valid for six months from the date of issue, allowing for double entries with a maximum stay of 30 days for each entry. However, Sri Lanka e-visa can be requested at the Department of Immigration and Emigration in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It's important to remember that the eTA is not a visa; it's an authorization to travel to the country. Entry into Sri Lanka is at the discretion of immigration officers at the point of entry.

Who Needs an eTA for Sri Lanka?

The eTA is required for citizens of most countries intending to travel to Sri Lanka for tourism, business, or transit purposes. There are, however, some exceptions. Nationals from Singapore, Maldives, and Seychelles are exempt from the eTA requirement for stays up to 30 days. On the other hand, visitors from Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, Somalia, and a few other countries must apply for a visa at a Sri Lankan diplomatic mission before traveling to Sri Lanka, regardless of the duration of their stay.
