Union Pacific Cancer Cluster
The Union Pacific Rail Yard just northeast of downtown Houston is contaminated by an ingredient that has been associated with a cancer cluster. These chemicals include dioxin and creosote.
A study showed that ground water and soil around the railyard were contaminated with substantial amounts of the toxic substances. Researchers have found that the affected residents have been identified as having skin, prostate, and bile duct cancers. This is a form of liver cancer.
Creosote
Creosote is a chemical compound that contains hundreds of chemicals used to preserve wood and other materials. It is believed to be a carcinogen. Creosote may cause eye damage and skin irritation, as well as cancer.
Houston's union pacific cancer cluster is the group that has been infected by creosote. Union Pacific has been protesting the pollution for months , and the community is demanding that they get rid of it.
It has been a long struggle for residents to force the railroad company to clean up the pollution. They are not giving up, and they are currently suing the railroad company in federal courts, hoping that the company will finally acknowledge responsibility for the contamination.
They claim that creosote has been an endocrine-depleting substance that has been infiltrating their homes and causing them to become ill. They say that pollution is causing cancer in children five times more than the average for the nation.
In addition to creating illness in addition, the pollution is making residents lose their jobs and homes. The pollution is leaking into the soil and into the air, water and soil within the neighborhood.
According to the Houston Chronicle creosote was removed from the site by Southern Pacific for many decades before it was bought by Union Pacific in 1997. The company did not accept responsibility for the pollution until the last few years, when residents began an effort to clean up the polluted area.
Despite their efforts, residents of the union Pacific cancer cluster continue suffer from ailments such as lung and esophagus cancers. They also have a high rate of childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia.
While Railroad Workers Cancer aren't able to pinpoint the exact cause behind the contamination, they suspect that it is caused by chemical compounds in creosote. These chemicals have been linked to an increased risk of throat, esophus, as well as lung cancers.
The chemical is said to have been employed in a variety ways, including wood preservation and as a cure for ringworm. It is also a frequent ingredient in insecticides and fungicides.
Research has shown that the chemicals in creosote undergo an oxidation-reduction reaction that renders them harmful. This could lead to biodegradation and release toxic byproducts into the soil and water. However, the process can be slow and only effective if the initial chemical compounds aren't too high in concentration.
Dioxin
Dioxin is a class of chemicals that have been linked to various kinds of cancers. It is harmful to kidneys, liver and central nervous system.
The chemical is found in the soil, air and water. It is also absorbed through the skin or consumed in food. It is one of the "dirty dozen" chemicals.
The people who are exposed to high levels of dioxins from industrial or occupational accidents could develop health issues, including cancer, liver problems , and thyroid diseases. However, the health consequences of dioxins at low levels are not fully understood.
Researchers are still researching the long-term effects the contaminant. It has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals as well as in people who live in areas.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dioxins have been proven to increase the risk for certain types of cancer . They may also affect the reproductive and immune systems. They can also cause birth defects.
The most frequent ways dioxins get absorption occurs through eating fats or burning household waste as well as being exposed to hazardous waste. Other sources of dioxins that are found in the environment include industrial accidents, herbicides, and pesticides.
If you smoke, you are more likely to have higher levels of dioxins than the other people. You can lower the risk by quitting smoking.
It is also essential to eat nutritious, healthy and balanced meals, including fruits, vegetables and grains. They can help to prevent or limit your exposure to dioxins and their compounds.
A healthy diet can help you to avoid other health problems caused by dioxins, like lung cancer or bronchus cancers. It is also recommended to avoid eating meats and milk products with high levels of fat.
Choosing foods that are low in fat can assist in reducing the risk of exposure to dioxins. It is also important to consume plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables , and drink lots of water.
Dioxin, a toxic chemical, has been linked to different types of cancers like breast and liver cancer. It can be harmful to the heart, brain and lung tissue.
Toxic Metals
Metals like copper and cadmium are essential to our daily lives, but they can become harmful if used in too high. They are also found at trace levels in sewage and other sources of pollution and in some electronic waste (e-waste).
A variety of heavy metals in the environment have been linked to a variety of diseases including cancer. Despite their significance in the development and onset of these conditions it isn't clear which organ systems.
The toxicity of heavy metals is based on the chemical properties of individual ions and the cell target that they bind to. These interactions include the production of ROS inhibiting enzymes that create antioxidant compounds, and the inactivation of other proteins that could protect cells from toxic effects.
As well as these common mechanisms, each metal has its own unique toxicities. Cadmium and copper for instance, could weaken antioxidant defenses by generating superoxide anionradios (ROS) that damage mitochondrial DNA and mitochondrial functions. In addition that these metals are able to connect to protein phosphatases (PP) and inactivate glutathione peroxidase.
Lead, arsenic, and other oxidative stresses that can cause inflammation or lipid peroxidation are often linked to them. These oxidative stresses can lead to heart disease, lung cancer as well as other health issues.
This is particularly the case for lead and arsenic that can stimulate the expression of pro-inflammatory chemokines and microRNAs that promote the growth of cancerous cells. It is also possible that these chemicals interact with genes that regulate the process of cell cycle progression and DNA repair to increase their carcinogenic and mutagenic effects.
The risk of developing prostate cancer is another important role that heavy metals play. This is a significant concern as prostate cancer is the most widespread type of cancer for men and the most prevalent cause of death from prostate cancer in the United States.
Furthermore, copper and cadmium have been shown to increase the risk of coronary diseases such as coronary heart disease, cadmium and stroke. These findings are particularly significant as they show the importance of environmental toxic metals in increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. They also play a role as behavioral factors. However, more studies are needed to better characterise the associations and assess causality.
Pesticides
Pesticides are chemical compounds that are used to control insects and diseases as well as fungi in the field of agriculture (Langley and Mort 2012, Mostafalou and Abdollahi 2017,). They are vital in maintaining agricultural production and providing healthy food for the population. They can be harmful to the environment and to human health if inhaled or come in direct contact with skin.
The United States uses over 1.1 billion pounds of pesticides every year. This is a significant amount of toxic chemicals that can be inhaled, or ingestion. The Environmental Protection Agency regulates pesticide use.
Pesticides are commonly employed on a variety of crops. However, there is increasing concern over their impact on the environment and human health. The World Health Organization has classified certain pesticides as possibly carcinogenic or cause cancer.
This has led to an increasing number of research projects to investigate the link between exposure to pesticides and health outcomes such as cancer. These studies are conducted by employing a variety of methods which include multilevel mixed effects models, linear models, and Cox proportional hazards regressions.
These methods are commonly used to evaluate the association between a particular chemical and health-related outcome such as cancer at a state, regional or national level. This is particularly important because it provides a comprehensive view of possible connections between environmental agents, health outcomes, and also allows for targeted studies on specific chemicals.
Another important effect of pesticides on health is the potential for exposure to occupational activities that require the application transportation, storage and transportation of these chemicals. This type of exposure can be influenced by a variety of factors, including the location of the worker and the type of products workers use.
Pesticides can also be absorbed directly through the skin, or via inhalation. They could also be present as food. This could be harmful to health, especially in children and infants.
Pesticides can also contaminate the air and groundwater, which can lead to respiratory problems and kidney damage. These pollutants can be emitted through a variety sources, like factories and waste incinerators. Dioxins are among the most hazardous in that they can lead to cancer as well as other illnesses like liver disease.
