Doi alleged that Union Pacific was negligent in various ways, including failing to supervise and train its employees properly. Doi also claimed that Union Pacific failed to follow industry standards and provided appropriate safety procedures. The jury awarded him $557 million in damages.

In addition to the $557 million awarded, a portion of the money will be used to fund the future medical treatment of the victim.
