Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn't taken the necessary steps to clean up an underground plume that is contaminated rail yard. And now, the latest tests suggest that the contamination could still be affecting those who live nearby.
Researchers believe it could be due to higher cancer rates in the area. Two years after the launch of an all-state health investigation the researchers discovered that there were higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic as well as adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the region around the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote which is a common chemical that is used to treat wood is also a typical one. It can cause cancer in people who are exposed to it.
It is a heavy, oily substance that is amber or black in color and has a smokey odor and burnt taste. Railroad Cancer Settlement Amounts is a distillation of coal product and has been in use for more than 150 years as a wood preservative.
It is utilized in the United States to treat railroad tieways, as well as other kinds of woods like fence posts, utility poles, as well as pilings for marine structures. It can also be used to safeguard log homes and other structures from rot and infestation.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that creosote could be a risky chemical. Short-term exposure can cause irritation of the skin and eyes and chemical burns stomach discomfort burning of the mouth or throat, and kidney or liver problems.
Long-term exposure could lead to skin and scrotum carcinomas. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are at risk.
It is thought to be a probable human carcinogen as per the EPA. It has been linked to a range of different cancer types such as esophageal or lung cancer.
Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for years, thanks to a former rail yard near their homes. Lung Cancer Lawsuit Settlements claim that the chemical has affected their soil, homes and is spreading underground.
Csx Lawsuit Settlements of Houston and Harris County have joined the effort to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination regularly and take preventative measures to stop the spread.
A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed a lawsuit against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote was a source of contamination in their soil, causing significant health problems as a result of the former rail yard.
They are seeking damages from the railroad to cover the costs of cleanup and other related costs. They also claim to be harmed by environmental racism and discrimination and other forms of pollution that have adversely affected their families and friends.
Dioxin
Dioxins are chemical compounds that don't break down in the environment quickly , and can remain in the air, the soil of the water, or sediment for long periods. They can be found in a variety of places such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke, and incineration or hazardous waste.
Although the effects of dioxin on health at low levels are not well-studied but there is evidence that they can cause serious illnesses like cancer. Dioxin levels that are higher are linked to a higher risk for heart disease, organ cancers immune issues, and endocrine issues, like hormonal imbalances. They can also cause hormonal problems, suppressed immunity womenstrual issues, diabetes and weight loss.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) the most prevalent way people are exposed is through food and water. They aren't volatile or water-soluble, so they are more likely to be taken into the body via the consumption of dairy products or fish and other seafood.
However, it is important to be aware that the amount of exposure that can have a harmful effect on your health will depend on various factors, including the amount of food you consume or drink, how often you drink or eat and the amount of air you breathe. You should also take into consideration your gender, age, nutrition, and family characteristics to determine whether you will be exposed to dioxins.
Furthermore, the kind of contaminant is another important aspect. According to the EPA the EPA, certain toxins are more harmful than others to human health. For instance, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative effect on your health than creosote.
PCBs can cause damage to eyes as well as the liver, kidneys and kidneys. They also can harm the immune system and cause problems in the development of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.
For years, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a cluster of cancer-related deaths which has been connected to the Union Pacific rail yard, close to their communities. The announcement released on Friday by Houston's health department said that it found cancer-causing chemicals on surface samples near the rail yard. The release said that the findings were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's planning to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan that he submitted to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be adequate in light of the findings.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
PCBs, also known as polychlorinated Biphenyls, are noxious chemicals that have been used for over 60 years in industrial and consumer products. PCBs were banned in 1979 after being discovered to cause cancer, inhibit the immune system, and hinder learning.
PCBs can contaminate soil as well as water and air in many parts of the world once they are released into the environment. They bind strongly to organic matter, and tend to remain in the environment for a long time and therefore, are easily transported and accumulated in the environment.
In the end, PCBs are a major threat for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. The EPA considers them a probable human carcinogen and has proved that they can cause cancer in lab animals.
Certain studies also show a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially true for children who have been exposed to these chemicals while during the pregnancy.
The primary route for exposure to PCBs is through food items. Fish is the primary source of exposure because they are the largest source of PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products and other agricultural products.
Showering or drinking PCB-contaminated water is another method of exposure. This could be the result of leaks or spillages in electrical or other equipment.
People can also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in the air or through skin contact. These chemicals can trigger the condition known as Chloracne. This is small, pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that may last for weeks or even years.
However the effects of PCBs on human health aren't fully known. Researchers have suggested that they may cause biliary and liver cancers in humans. However, more research is needed to understand how this impacts us.
The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals can cause birth defects in newborn babies. A low birth weight has been linked to Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in life. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.
Lead
Lung Cancer Lawsuit Settlements is a toxic metal that can be found in many products including paints, pipes and food containers. The body can absorb it through two main routes: oral and respiratory.
It is an extremely oxidizing chemical and can react with other chemicals present in your environment. It is able to accumulate in the body, and can cause serious health issues such as cancer and other illnesses.
Houston residents who live near the Union Pacific Railroad's legacy creosote plant have a high incidence of cancer. The city has requested the federal government to order the railroad to cleanse its contaminated facility.
The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contaminating its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with carcinogenic chemicals to humans, like creosote. Residents have claimed that the company has been trying to clean up contamination but the plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.
One of the most significant problems that stemmed from the contamination is the groundwater plume beneath homes in the region. A recent study by health officials has revealed that soil samples from the rail yard have higher levels of creosote than what is required for drinking water.
Another concern is that creosote is slowly disappearing into the air. It is causing residents to inhale harmful levels of vapors which could be fatal for both children as well as adults.
It is possible that the vapors cause cancer in those who inhale them. To find out more about the effects of the vapors on the lives of residents, a door-to-door survey is being conducted in the neighborhood.
This is a serious problem for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a terribly sad situation that must be addressed as soon as possible.
A Department of State Health Services study found that the rate of leukemia was five times higher among children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhoods than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more common in the neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
