Minecraft's Ray-tracing Beta Launches on PC this Week

Ten years since its release, and Minecraft remains one of the most popular games of our times It's now getting a revamp with Ray Tracing. This is the most advanced form of gaming graphics. It mimics the physical behavior and lighting to give a game a cinematic-quality rendering.

NVIDIA first revealed it was working on these realistic visuals for Minecraft last year - now they're set to roll out to Windows users on April 16th. In beta, the release will offer the same Minecraft single-player experience, except with ray-traced reflections, shadows, lighting, and customized realistic materials. Plus, you'll get to explore six brand-new RTX worlds created by community creators. These worlds comprise Aquatic Adventure, Imagination Island and Neon District, are available for free in the Minecraft Marketplace for players running Minecraft Windows 10.

The visually-oriented version also comes with physically-based rendering (PBR). This means that surfaces will look more real, regardless of whether they're rough matte stone or glossy smooth Ice. NVIDIA's NVIDIA DLSS 2.0 is available to help with the heavy lifting required to power all this. This updated version of NVIDIA's AI upscaler makes use of RTX Tensor cores to process an image with a lower resolution and then upscale it to the resolution you want and is said to do a better job than the previous feature that launched alongside NVIDIA's RTX cards.

Of course, because it's still in beta, you can expect a few issues at this point. Certain features aren't available in the beta, for instance, such as multiplayer realms as well as third-party servers and cross-play. There are still a few design issues and certain dimensions have not yet been optimized for the ray tracing. Banners are still black , and slime mobs don't have an appearance. These are things that will be fixed in the near future. A date is yet to be announced for an official release - developers are hoping to get community feedback on the beta release first.
