Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to clean up the creosote sludge that is buried at its rail yard that is contaminated. Now, the most recent tests have revealed that the contamination may still be affecting people who live nearby.
Researchers suggest it could be related to elevated cancer rates in the area. Two years into a state health investigation, they found higher-than-expected levels of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia and adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers in the neighborhoods around the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote, a common chemical, is employed in the treatment of wood. It can cause cancer in those exposed to it.
It is a heavy oily substance, from amber to black in color. It has a smokey smell and a burnt taste. It is a coal tar distillation product that has been used for over 150 years as an ingredient in wood preservative.
In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties and other types of wood, including fence posts, utility poles and marine pilings. It can also be used to protect log homes and other structures against the effects of rot and insect invasion.
According to Lung Cancer Lawsuit Settlements United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Creosote is an extremely dangerous chemical. Exposure to it for short periods can cause irritation of the skin and eyes as well as chemical burns stomach pain and burning of the throat or mouth and liver or kidney problems.
Long-term exposure may cause skin and scrotum cancer. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.
It is thought to be a probable human carcinogen, according to the EPA. Railroad Cancer Settlements has been linked with various cancers, including esophageal as well lung cancer.
Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for years due to the former rail yard that was located near their homes. They say the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated and continues to spread throughout the underground.
The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the campaign to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination regularly and take preventative measures to stop the spread.
A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed an action against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They allege that creosote from the former rail yard is contaminating soil beneath their homes , causing significant health issues.
They are seeking compensation for their ailments and suffering as well as damages from railroads for the cost of cleanup and other costs. They also claim to be harmed by environmental racism and discrimination and other forms of pollution that has affected them and their families.
Dioxin
Dioxins are substances that do not break down in the environment quickly and can remain in the air, in the soil or in sediment for long periods. They can be derived from many sources, including natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.
Although the health effects of dioxin at low levels are not identified, there is evidence that they can cause serious illnesses such as cancer. People who are exposed to higher levels of dioxin are found to be at risk of organ cancers, heart disease, immune system disorders and endocrine changes including hormonal imbalances. Csx Lawsuit Settlements can also lead to reproductive problems, a suppressed immune system, menstrual and diabetes issues as well as hair loss, weight gain and facial cysts called chloracne.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) the most prevalent way people are exposed is through water and food. They aren't volatile and water-soluble, so they are easily taken in by the body through the consumption of dairy products, meat, fish, and other seafood.
It is important to remember, however, that exposure can cause harm to your health based on a variety of factors , including how much you drink, eat and how often you breathe. It is also crucial to consider your gender, age and diet, nutritional status and family traits, as well as other health factors that could determine whether you'll be affected by dioxins or not.
The type of contaminant also important. The EPA states that certain toxic substances are more likely to cause harm impact on health than others. Polychlorinated Biphenyls, or PCBs are more likely than creosote affect your health.
PCBs can cause damage to eyes as well as the liver, kidneys and kidneys. They also can harm the immune system of the person and hinder the growth of healthy teeth and bones.
For a long time, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a string of cancer deaths that has been tied to the Union Pacific rail yard, close to their homes. The city's health department announced Friday that it has found cancer-causing chemical compounds in surface samples near the rail yard. The release stated that the findings were "not encouraging." Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he plans to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and said that a proposal that he has submitted to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be sufficient in light of the findings.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful chemicals that have been employed in industrial and consumer products for over 60 years. After being found to cause cancer and weaken the immune system These chemicals were banned in 1979.
PCBs can cause contamination of soil as well as water and air in a variety of regions of the world once they are released into the environment. They are strong binding agents of organic matter, and are transported easily and accumulated in the environment.
PCBs are a major issue for protecting the environment as well as public health. They are considered a probable human carcinogen by EPA, and have been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
Furthermore, some studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. Railroad Cancer Settlements is especially true for children who have been exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy.
The main route of exposure to PCBs is through food items. Fish are the primary source of exposure, since they are the source of the most PCBs. However, PCBs can also found in dairy products, beef, and other agricultural products.
Another method of being exposed to PCBs is through drinking and showering with water that is infected with PCBs. This can be caused by leaks or spills that occur in electrical and other equipment.
People may also be exposed to PCBs by breathing in air or skin contact. These chemicals can trigger an illness known as Chloracne. This is a mild, pale, yellow-colored skin lesions that can last for weeks or even years.
The effects of PCBs upon human health are still not fully comprehended. Some researchers have suggested they could cause liver and biliary tract cancers in humans, however more studies are needed to understand the extent to which this impacts us.
The EPA is also studying whether these chemicals might cause birth defects in newborn babies. Low birth weight has been linked with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in the course of. Two studies found that children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower birth weights , and/or an earlier age.
Lead
Lead is a toxic metal that can be found in many items like paints pipes and food containers. The body absorbs it through two main routes: respiratory and oral.
It is a potent chemical that is oxidizing and can react with other chemicals in your surroundings. It can build up in the body, and could lead to serious health issues, such as cancer and other diseases.
Houston residents who reside near the Union Pac Railroad's creosote legacy plant have a high incidence of cancer. The city has asked for the assistance of the federal government in the cleanup of the railroad's contaminated facility.
The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of polluting its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. The company has been trying to remove the mess, but a plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not enough residents claim.
The groundwater plume that runs beneath the homes in the affected area is one of the most serious consequences of the contamination. A recent study by the health department has revealed that the concentration of creosote present in soil samples in the rail yard is much higher than the levels recommended for drinking water.
Another major concern is that the creosote vapor is slowly escaping into the air. It causes residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors that are harmful for children as well as adults.
It is also possible that the fumes are causing cancers to the residents who are breathing them in. To find out more about the impact of the vapors on lives of residents the neighborhood, a door-to-door survey being done in the neighborhood.
This is a serious problem for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. It's a sad state of affairs and should be taken care of immediately.
A recent study conducted by the Department of State Health Services found that children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities contracted a type leukemia at a five times greater rate than what was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in these neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
