Union Pacific Cancer Cluster
The Union Pacific Rail Yard just northeast of downtown Houston is contaminated with the chemical connected to a cancer cluster. These chemicals include dioxin and creosote.
A study revealed that a significant amount of the toxins seeped into groundwater and the soil surrounding the railyard. Researchers say that impacted residents have been diagnosed with a range of illnesses such as skin cancer, prostate cancer and bile duct cancer that is a form of liver cancer.
Creosote
Creosote is an organic compound that contains hundreds of chemicals that are used to preserve wood and other materials. It is believed to be carcinogen. In addition to cancer, creosote is also known to cause eye damage and dermatitis.
Houston's union pacific cancer cluster is a group that is plagued by creosote. The community has protested against the pollution in recent months, and is now demanding that Union Pacific remove the waste.
Residents have fought for years trying to get the company clean up their pollution. They haven't given up, and they are currently suing the railroad company in federal courts, hoping the company will finally take responsibility for the contamination.
They claim that creosote has been an intoxic substance that has been infiltrating their homes and causing the people to become sick. They claim that the pollution causes children to develop cancer at a rate five times higher than the national average.
In addition to the health effects and causing environmental pollution, it is creating a situation where residents are losing their jobs and homes. The contamination is seeping into the soil, water and air in the neighborhood.
According to the Houston Chronicle creosote was removed from the site by Southern Pacific for many decades before it was bought by Union Pacific in 1997. Union Pacific did not take responsibility for the pollution until the last few years, when residents began an effort to clean up the pollution.
Despite their efforts, residents in the union pacific cluster continue to suffer from lung and esophageal cancers. They also have high rates for childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia.
While researchers do not know the exact cause behind the contamination, they believe that it is due to chemicals in creosote. These chemicals are linked to increased risks of lung, esophagus and throat cancers.
It is believed that the chemical was used in many ways such as wood preservation and as an anti-ringworm treatment. It is also used in insecticides and fungicides.
Research has proven that creosote chemicals have an oxidation-reduction process that renders them poisonous. This can lead to the biodegradation and release toxic byproducts into the soil and water. However, the process can be slow and only effective if the initial chemical compounds aren't too high in concentration.
Dioxin
Dioxin is just one of the chemicals that has been linked with various types of cancers. It is toxic to kidneys, the liver and the central nervous system.
The chemical is present in the soil, air, and water. It can also be absorbed through the skin or ingested in food. It is among the "dirty dozen" chemicals.
People exposed to dioxins at high levels through occupational exposure or industrial accidents could develop health issues such as liver cancer, cancer, issues and thyroid disease. However, the effects on health of dioxin at low levels are unclear.
The long-term effects of this contaminant are still being studied by scientists. It has been linked to cancer in laboratory animals as well as those who live in contaminated areas.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) Dioxins have also been proven to increase the risk of certain kinds of cancer. Additionally, they can damage the immune and reproductive systems. In addition, they could cause some kinds of birth defects.
Dioxins can be absorbed in numerous ways, including eating foods high in fat, burning household trash, as well as exposure to harmful materials. Other sources of dioxins in the environment include industrial accidents, herbicides, and pesticides.
You are more likely to have more levels than others smoking cigarettes. You can reduce your risk by quitting smoking.
Healthy, balanced, nutritious diets are important, especially when it comes to fruits, vegetables grains, grains, and other foods. These can help prevent or limit your exposure to dioxins , as well as their compounds.
Healthy eating habits can help you avoid ailments like lung cancers and bronchus. Also, you should avoid eating meats and milk products with high levels of fat.
You can reduce your exposure by selecting foods that are low in fat. It is also important to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables and drink lots of water.
Dioxin is a hazardous chemical that has been linked to numerous kinds of cancers, including breast and liver cancer. It can cause harm to the heart, brain and lungs.
Toxic Metals
Metals like cadmium and copper are vital to our lives, but can become harmful if used in too high. They can also be found in tiny amounts in sewage, and other polluting sources, as in electronic waste (ewaste).
A number of heavy metals in the environment have been linked with many different diseases, including cancer. Despite their role in the onset or development of these conditions, it is still not clear how they affect different organ systems or how to avoid their toxic effects.
The chemical properties of Ions and the targets cellular ions they connect to determine the toxicity of heavy metals. These interactions can lead to the creation of ROS as well as inhibition of enzymes that generate Oxidative metabolites as well as the activation of other proteins that may be able to protect cells from toxicity.
Each metal is unique in its toxicity. Cadmium and copper for instance, may weaken antioxidant defenses , causing superoxide anionradios (ROS) that damage mitochondrial DNA and mitochondrial functions. In addition the metals may be a binder to protein phosphatases (PP) and inactivate glutathione peroxidase.
Similarly, arsenic and lead are often linked with an oxidative stress, which results in inflammation and lipid peroxidation. These oxidative stresses can cause heart disease, lung cancer and other health issues.
This is particularly the case for lead and arsenic which can trigger the expression of pro-inflammatory chemokines and microRNAs that aid in the growth of cancer cells. It is also possible that these chemicals interact with genes involved in the regulation of cell cycle progression as well as DNA repair, which can enhance their mutagenic and carcinogenic effects.
Another important function of heavy metals is in enhancing the risk of prostate cancer. This is a significant concern because prostate cancer is the most widespread type of cancer among men and the most common cause of death due to prostate cancer in the United States.
In addition, copper and cadmium have been found to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease as well as coronary heart disease and stroke. These findings are of particular significance as they show the importance of toxic metals that are found in the environment in increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. They also play an important role as behavioral determinants. However, more research is required to better characterise the associations and assess causality.
Pesticides
Pesticides are chemical substances used to control insects, weeds and fungi as well as other organisms in agriculture (Langley and Mort 2012; Mostafalou and Abdollahi 2017). They are essential in maintaining agricultural production and in providing safe food for people. However, they may be harmful to the environment as well as human health when absorbed through direct contact with skin or inhalation.
The United States uses over 1.1 billion pounds of pesticides each year. This is a significant amount of toxic chemicals that could be inhaled or consumed. The use of pesticides are regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Pesticides are commonly used on many crops. However, there is increasing concern about their impact on the environment and human health. The World Health Organization has classified certain pesticides as carcinogenic or cause cancer.
There are increasing efforts to study the connection between pesticide exposure and cancer. These studies employ different methods, including multilevel mixed effects models as well as Cox proportional risks regressions.
These methods are typically used to determine the connection between a specific chemical and health-related outcome like cancer, at a local, state or national level. This type of analysis is crucial since it provides a broad view of the possible links between environmental agentsand health outcomes, and allows for targeted studies on specific chemicals.
Another important effect of pesticides on human health is the potential for exposure to occupational activities that involve the application transportation, storage and transportation of these chemicals. This type of exposure can be influenced by several factors, such as the location of the worker as well as the kind of products workers are exposed to.
Pesticides can also be absorbed directly through the skin or inhalation. They can also be present in food. This can be harmful to the health of children and infants.
Pesticides can also harm groundwater and air, which could cause respiratory issues and kidney damage. These pollutants can be released by many sources, including factories and waste incinerators. Most hazardous are dioxins. They can cause cancer and other diseases such as liver disease.
