Minecraft: How to Play with Friends on other Platforms Using Cross-play

Minecraft is a fantastic game to play with your friends and you can play cross-play with them no matter the platform, so long as you're playing the same version.



This means that if you have the Java Edition of Minecraft, you are only able to play with folks who also have the Java Edition. The Bedrock Edition is the same. You'll need to purchase the other version if you have different versions.



All platforms that run Minecraft Bedrock Edition are compatible. This includes the Nintendo Switch and all other platforms that run Minecraft Bedrock Edition, including the Xbox One, Windows PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Windows PC, and mobile devices. Participating in a game with a friend



You can join a friend's hosted session directly by clicking on the Friends tab. If you're friends via Microsoft, you can join their session by going through the Friends tab and looking under "Joinable Cross-Platform Friends."



These sessions can hold up to eight people at a time.



A pop-up will appear when you are invited to join the session. You can choose to accept or decline.



Invite friends to your game



To invite friends, use the start menu in the game. You will see a bar asking you to invite your friends. After you click "invite" you can invite friends to join your game.



You should be aware of the permissions your session is granted (visible in the settings). You can modify it so that participants in your session only view your world, or let them roam free by constructing and breaking blocks. You can even grant them administrative rights. You can also set these privileges for each person who join your session by clicking the yellow icon next to their names.



Multiplayer Multiplayer: Realms



Players can also join Realms, which are servers that stay active all the time and do not require hosting to be currently playing.



Invites can be sent to your Realm via the Friends tab, or via the link if you play on the PC. The Minecraft application will launch by clicking the link. Console players must be invited by friends list.



Once you have joined the Realm, you can return anytime you like from the Friends tab. As long as the Realm remains online, all Reams that you have joined will be listed under "Joinable Realms".
