Tonic clonic seizures in adults are characterized by loss of consciousness and sudden, uncontrollable muscle stiffness. They may be caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The seizure typically lasts less than two minutes and usually involves only one area of the body.
Generalized tonic-clonic seizures (GTCS) can be treated with Fycompa, a novel sodium channel blocker, and other antiepileptic medications. Adults should take 2 mg of Fycompa each day, and the maintenance dose is 8 or 12 mg per day. In children, the recommended daily dose is 5 to 9 mg/kg. If necessary, increase the dose by 1 to 3 mg/kg weekly.

Eslicarbazepine acetate is an atypical sodium channel blocker. It is used in combination with other medications to treat treatment-resistant epilepsy. During this trial, it was evaluated in a prospective population-based register.
