Tonic-clonic seizures are characterized by involuntary muscle contraction and jerking motions, or myoclonus. Myoclonus may occur in only one part of the body, such as the eyeballs, or involve the arms, legs, or torso.
Seizures are caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. These abnormalities are caused by a wide variety of factors, including brain injury, drug dependency, and environmental exposure. It is possible to prevent or reduce the frequency of seizures, and most people with epilepsy can lead normal, full lives with proper medication.

If a person is experiencing a tonic-clonic seizure, he or she should place an object soft under the head. This can help prevent injury to the head or neck. He or she should also make sure the airway is clear.
