Four Types of Transformational Resistance
Transformational Resistance
Resistance has long been used by educators to describe the process through which students make educational choices. It has been divided into four forms: reactionary/self-defeating resistance (Solorzano & Bernal 2001), conformist or self-serving resistance, transformative or social justice-oriented resistance and non-transformative/non-social justice-oriented resistance (Giroux 1983b, 1985).

Reactionary Resistance
This student behavior illustrates a critique of oppressive conditions and structures of domination, motivated by a desire for social justice. Unfortunately, academic leadership is only an effective form of resistance that does not help to undermine the systems from which it stems.

Self-Defeating Resistance
This student behavior displays a critique of oppressive social conditions and structures without being motivated by an urge for social justice. Unfortunately, this limited form of resistance helps reinforce these systems of oppression, thus increasing the student's vulnerability within them.

academic leadership indicates an awareness and desire for social justice, yet does not offer the greatest potential for social change. It does not challenge school institutional practices, question the relevance of pedagogy and curriculum, or assess how socioeconomic factors impact a student's educational experience.

Transformational Resistance
Student behavior that shows an advanced understanding and desire for social justice often signifies a deeper level of commitment to change. While such change may not take place immediately, the potential is there for it to transform oppressive conditions and the structures of dominance from which it emerged.

academic leadership of resistance is a combination of these three traits: awareness and critique of oppressive conditions and structures of domination, an enthusiasm for social justice issues, and a drive to achieve transformative results. This combination makes transformational resistance the most likely catalyst for social change and most empowering for students.
