How to use Split-Screen With Minecraft

Do you remember the good old days when you played console games with your friends on a split-screen? Now you can relive those memories and make fantastic new ones using Minecraft split-screen. This feature is only available for consoles (Nintendo Switch and PlayStation) However, it is possible to create new memories with Minecraft split-screen.

Your TV screen or console must support at least 720p resolution. Split-screen isn't supported by PlayStation Vita because it uses QHD (1/4th of 1080p). WiiU does not support split-screen, too, since it has only 480p resolution. You will need to connect qualifying devices to a TV screen with an HDMI or RGB component cable.

Find out more information here and detailed steps on splitting the screen in Minecraft.

Minecraft Splitscreen Requirements

As we've already mentioned that you'll require an entertainment system and a console with 720p resolution or higher. Additionally, you must adjust the resolution of your console to match the TV. This is straightforward. You can see the display options on your console's settings. PS3, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series S/X and Switch typically automatically set the resolution when using HDMI However, previous manual adjustments may cause an issue requiring manual reconfiguration.

You can split the screen in Minecraft locally or online. The local split-screen can hold up to four players at a time. Playing with friends or family can be very enjoyable when you have a big TV screen. Let's start with tips for local split-screens. Later, the online split-screen will get explained as well.

How to Split-Screen Minecraft Locally

Local split-screen is a method to play on a single console. It should not be confused with LAN (local network) play, which requires multiple devices being utilized. On any device, up to four people can play. The instructions for playing Minecraft in split-screen mode vary slightly for each game console but the instructions below will cover them all.

Here's how to set up a 'local split-screen in Minecraft:

1. Connect the console to the TV using an HDMI or component cable, and then launch Minecraft.

2. If you wish to start from scratch, select Create New or load a previous game world from the list.

3. Slide the Multiplayer Game to the off position in the Multiplayer Settings

4. Set the difficulty and other game options to your preference.

5. To launch the game, select the option to Create or Play.

6. Use an alternative controller to activate the second console player and then click the appropriate button(s) to join them in Minecraft. For example the PS4 uses the PS button to enable a user. It also uses the button Options (pressed twice) to add the second player to Minecraft.

7. If you don't have one already, select the account for the other person. XBOX 360 and PS3 use the Minecraft Legacy Console Edition, that is why you must press Start on the second controller to get in the game, then it will prompt the user to log into the console.

How to Split-Screen Minecraft Online

You can play Minecraft in a split-screen mode with your local friends, while also playing with other players online. Online play does not come with a split screen. However there are two or more local players can share the split-screen with others who are online. Here's how to set the split-screen up for online play.

1. Log into your console with your Xbox Live Gold account or PlayStation Plus account. For XBOX 360 and XBOX One, local accounts and players on XBOX Live Silver (the free Live subscription) cannot join. The PS3 doesn't require PlayStation Plus, but the PS4 does.

2. For Minecraft Legacy editions, open on your console and choose Play Game, then Load or Create. For Bedrock editions, click Create New or select a game on your list.

3. You can adjust the game's options to suit your preference and then launch your game. On Bedrock go to the Multiplayer menu and make sure the Multiplayer Game is switched on prior to playing the game.

4. Other "remote" players can choose your invitation (required) to join your game. Split-screen is only available on a per-console basis and can be used with up to four players, but they can play online alongside other players.

Minecraft's an interesting, fun and imaginative game. Like all games, it's better when you play with your friends. You can split the screen and play Minecraft as you would play older console games that you played with other players.

PC users may be feeling left out however, which is perfectly normal. It's unfortunate that a huge monitor screen can't be split and used the same way as a console. There are screen-splitting tools from third parties on the market that you can explore, but they're not official and may not be reliable.
