The Problems With 'Possums
A lot of us feel closer to nature by adding bird feeders inside our backyard. One with the problems linked to bird feeders could be the unwanted guests that the bird feeder may attract.
If you were to setup a camera and take nighttime photos from the area beneath your bird feeder, you'd be in awe of all the different animals that will arrive.
Opossums (possums), in addition to many other species have a built-in GPS that knows the venue of every bird feeder in the neighborhood. These animals and then make nightly house calls to scrub up the seeds that birds have scattered in the grass within the bird feeder.
Although possums have an overabundance teeth (50) than some other North American animal, they usually acquiesce to raccoons, and often will often fight with skunks over those discarded bird-seeds. Some of the nighttime skunk odors you smell are a result of those skunk and possum confrontations.
As these nocturnal animals travel to and from a bird feeder, occasionally their route will need them over the first step toward your home. They may stop at your air conditioner for the drink of water with the condensation pipe about the unit. That's when the true trouble begins.
Many air conditioning units have openings within the frame where the unit sits. Animals can squeeze through these openings and gain access into the crawlspace. Now they use a safe home to reside in, near a water and food source.
Not being house-broken, these animals deposit waste (usually along the inside foundation wall) beneath your house, and you may will experience unpleasant odors filtering up into your property. Another problem primarily linked to possums are fleas.
Over time, as fleas multiply on these animals some from the fleas will start to appear through the floor and into the house. Our company gets several phone calls every month from your home owners with flea problems who don't even own pets. Many times those fleas will be the result of a possum or any other animal inside crawlspace.
Now onto a few from the more unpleasant possum problems. One is odor. Possums will exude an incredibly unpleasant green secretion sometimes of distress in fact it is a good smell to behold. Possums also have a very short lifespan. Whether it's a design flaw, bad luck or perhaps plain deficiency of intelligence, possums continue to exist average only a couple of years inside wild. If you have one living in the crawlspace video whole new amount of possum problem.
Of all of the dead animals we remove from crawlspaces, approximately 80% are possums. Possum Catcher Melbourne give an impression of a dead possum is one thing you truly wish to avoid, as will be the fleas looking to get a new "live" host.
I hope scanning this piece has allowed you to practice a little a new challenge about possums along with the problems they can pose.
