Avanos Medical, a U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food & Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access system because of a misplaced nasoenteric tube or nasogastric tubs that could have resulted in injuries or even deaths of patients. The recall covers 629 devices that were sold in the United States.
Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos offers the Cortrak*2 enteral access device for its visualisation of the small bowel and stomach, which aids in the placement of a feeding tube. Patients can suffer from harm to their vocal cords or trachea, if the tube was inserted in a wrong way. Avanos Medical has reported that there have already been more than 23 deaths and 60 injuries caused by misplacement of the nasogastric feeding tubes with the CORTRAK*2 Ental Access System. Pneumothorax, pulmonary failure (collapsed lung tissue) perforation (a hole in one's esophagus or the bowel wall) as well as pneumonia and excess fluid that is accumulating between the lung and chest cavity (the chest cavity and lungs) have all been among the incidents.
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to receive updated labeling in order to confirm proper placement of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
Avanos Medical Avanos is the second caution that the FDA has issued in relation to intra-oral feeding tubes. In February, parents as well as healthcare professionals were informed by the FDA about the possibility of strangulation of children with feeding tubes. Two cases of strangulation by a child were reported in 2021. The reason for this was the tubing system that was wrapped around the neck of one of the patients.
