Avanos Medical and the FDA have issued a Class 1 recall of 629 units of CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System, a feeding tube device that has been associated with dozens of deaths and injuries.
The devices for recall were made available from April 1, 2016 to January 1, 2022. Avanos Medical feeding tube These devices can be used by healthcare professionals to insert feeding tubes inside the stomach or intestines.
Cortrak 2 eternal access system Since 2015, there have been 23 deaths and 60 injuries recorded due to nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes that were placed in a wrong way.
Avanos Medical feeding tube The recall will change the label on the device, in order to inform users to ensure that the tube has been properly placed prior to delivering food.
According to FDA the adverse events were respiratory failure and pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and perforation, a hole in the bowel or wall of the lungand pneumonia (a lung infection) and the pleural effusion (excess fluid in the lung space and your chest cavity).
