The Avanos MedicalCortrak*2 Enteral Access System was developed to help healthcare professionals with training to insert medical feeding tubes into the small bowel or stomach of patients who have to get nutrition via the tube. The feeding tube has been associated with 23 deaths since the year 2015.
Avanos Medical feeding tube There have been many instances of death and injury from patients who have lost their nasogastric tube.
This recall can be used to modify the labels of the device, such as the usage instructions and the intended usage. The updated instructions instruct users to verify the tube's placement according to the protocols of their institution before using the tube to deliver nutrients.
Avanos Medical Patients are at risk of suffering severe injuries or even death due to incorrectly placed the nasogastric or nasoenteric tubes.
The recall notice from Avanos Medical declared that there were sixty-three injuries and 23 deaths due to the misplacement or removal of the nasogastric feed tubes in the use of the CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System. This occurred from the year 2015. There have been several adverse events, such as respiratory failure and pneumothorax (collapsed lungs) as well as perforation (a gap or opening in the wall of the esophagus or bowel) as well as pneumonia and pleural effusion (excess liquid in the air space between your lungs and the chest cavity).
Avanos Medical sent a field correction notice on March 21st 2022 to all customers who used the devices between January 2021 & January 2022. The notice included these instructions:
Place nasogastric or nasoenteric tubs according to the policies of the institution.
