Colter Wall Plaque
Canadian folk musician Colter Wall was born in Swift Current, Saskatchewan and was raised in the prairies of Canada. Colter Wall has a distinct style that blends blues, Americana and folk to tell stories about cowboys.


Colter Wall, a self-described outlaw country artist, combines autobiographical songs with traditional tunes to create an unique sound that reflects his province's heritage and culture. The first EP he released, Imaginary Appalachia, caught the interest of producer Jason Plumb and indie label Young Mary's Record Company, who brought him into the studio to record his debut full-length.


Songs of the Plains is the second album from him, and is a blend of traditional cowboy music and autobiographical tales that depict the rough terrain of his home town. He made influential friends such as Rick Rubin, Steve Earle and Lucinda.


With 2020's Western Swing & Waltzes and Other Thrilling Songs, Wall continues to focus on reviving and rejuvenating the cowboy theme in a manner that's true to its historical roots. Wall's new album is different from the solo albums that garnered him numerous accolades when he was in Canada. Instead Wall comes up with new ways to tell these timeless stories.



The ten-track album was recorded with a band and produced by Wall. Wall chose more of a DIY approach to his third album, allowing the songs to evolve as they were developed and cut down a bit from the recordings of his first two albums.


He covers classic songs by the cowboy such as Stan Jones' "Cowpoke," Marty Robbins’ "Big Iron" and Lewis Martin's "High & Mighty" on this album. He cuts out the harmonies and polish that usually accompany these songs and instead lets his voice take center stage on the track, which is accompanied by pedal steel, fiddle, DeFord Bailey-esque harmonica and piano.




These instruments are very well-constructed, but they do not outdo Wall's baritone voice that's flexible and varying throughout this collection of 10 tracks. This is a unique way of performing, but it's effective for this set of waltz-driven folk songs.


Wall's baritone, aged and worn from many years of performing, is perfect for this kind of work. This voice can be easily adapted, because he has the ability to change the intensity and pitch to match the mood of each track in the album.


There are a variety of great covers on this album, including a modernized version of the shuffled dance of "Cowpoke" to a reworked version of the sinister, technicolor rendition of the Stan Jones standard "High & Mighty" which includes pedal steel and harmonica. There are some originals, too, such as the ethereal dreamy title track that is about the way he imagines being performing on stage at a country and western concert as a child.


There aren't many singers who can pull off these genres as effortlessly as Wall is, and he also has the ability of captivating audiences with his voice and the stories contained in his songs.
