Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?
Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for decades that the company hasn’t taken the necessary steps to clean the plume of underground pollution that has contaminated the rail yard. The latest tests have demonstrated that the contamination may be affecting residents living nearby.
Researchers believe it could be due to the high rate of cancers in the region. Two years into a state health investigation and they found higher than expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic leukemia and adult kidney and renal pelvis cancers in neighborhoods surrounding the Union Pacific site.
Creosote
Creosote is a popular chemical that is used to treat wood, is also a common one. It is also a harmful substance and can cause cancers when exposed to it.
It is a dense, oily substance that is black or amber in appearance and has a smoky scent and a burnt flavor. It is a coal tar distillation product that has been in use for more than 150 years as a wood preservative.
It is utilized in the United States to treat railroad ties, as well as other types of woods, like fence posts and utility poles, and marine pilings. It is also used to shield log homes and other structures from insect infestation.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that creosote could be a hazardous chemical. A short-term exposure could cause eye and skin irritation, chemical burns, stomach pain burning of the mouth or throat, and kidney or liver issues.
Exposure for long periods can cause skin and scrotum carcinomas. This is a serious concern for those who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or in other manufacturing processes.
It is believed to be a human carcinogen, according to the EPA. It has been linked to a number of cancers of various types including esophageal as well as lung cancer.
Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote, because of a former railroad yard close to their homes. They say the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated and continues to spread underground.
The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the lawsuit against Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination on a regular basis and take preventative measures to prevent it from spreading.
In October of 2017 a group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote from the former rail yard is contaminating the soil beneath their homes and is causing significant health problems.
They are seeking compensation for their ailments and suffering and also damages from railroads for the cost of cleanup and other related costs. They claim that they have been affected by environmental racism discrimination, sexism, and other types of pollution that has affected their families as well as them.
Dioxin
Dioxins are substances that don't break down quickly in the environment, and they can be found in the air, water, soil or sediment for a long period of. They can be found in a variety of locations that include natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarettes, and incineration or hazardous waste.
Although the health effects of dioxin at low levels are not identified however, there is evidence to suggest that they can trigger serious diseases like cancer. Dioxin levels that are higher have been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, organ cancers immune issues, and endocrine disorders, such as hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to reproductive problems, a suppressed immune system, menstrual and diabetes issues, hair growth, weight loss and facial cysts called chloracne.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most common method people are exposed to dioxin is through drinking water or food. Csx Lawsuit Settlements are not volatile or water-soluble, so they are more likely to be absorbed into the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products, fish and other seafood.
It is vital to remember that exposure to dioxins could cause harm to your health, based on numerous aspects, such as the amount you eat, drink, and the frequency you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender and age, your diet, and family characteristics to determine if you'll be exposed to dioxins.
The kind of contaminant used is crucial. According to the EPA the EPA, certain toxins are more harmful than others to the health of humans. For instance, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a detrimental effect on your health than creosote.
For example, PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They also can harm the immune system of a person, and hinder the growth of healthy bones and teeth.
Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years of cluster of cancer deaths that are caused by the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is located next to their homes. The announcement made by the city's health department said that it found cancer-causing chemicals on surfaces near the rail yard. The release noted that the results weren't encouraging. FOX 26's Mayor Sylvester Turner stated that he plans on suing Union Pacific over the matter and that a proposed plan by Texas environmental regulators won't suffice.
Polychlorinated Biphenyls
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful chemicals that have been used in industrial and household products for over 60 years. These substances were banned in 1979 after being discovered to cause cancer, inhibit the immune system and inhibit learning.
Railroad Cancer Lawsuit Settlements can cause contamination of soil as well as water and air in many regions of the world after they are released into the environment. They are strong binding agents of organic matter, and are easily transported and then accumulated in the environment.
PCBs are a major problem for protecting the environment as well as public health. Railroad Cancer Settlement Amounts are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA and have been demonstrated to cause cancer in lab animals.
Additionally, some studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially the case for children who've been exposed to these chemicals in the womb.
PCBs are mainly consumed through food items. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products and other agricultural products.
Showering or drinking PCB-contaminated water is another method of exposure. This can happen from spills or leaks that may be caused by electrical or other equipment.
Similar to this, people may be exposed to PCBs through breathing air or through the skin. These chemicals can trigger an illness known as chloracne which is a mild, small yellow skin lesions which can last from weeks to years.
However, the effects of PCBs on human health aren't fully recognized. Some researchers have suggested they may cause liver and biliary tract cancers in humans, but further studies are needed to understand the extent to which this impacts us.
EPA is also studying whether these chemicals cause birth defects in newborns, such as less weight at birth. The low birth weight of newborns has been associated with Type II diabetes, insulin resistance and high blood pressure and later-life cardiovascular diseases. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.
Lead
Lead is a toxic metal and is found in many products, such as pipes, paints and food containers. The body absorbs it through two main routes: the respiratory and oral.
It is an extremely chemical that oxidizes and reacts with other substances in your environment. This can cause it to accumulate in the body and can cause serious health issues like cancer and other illnesses.
Houston residents who reside near the Union Pac Railroad's creosote-based plant that is its legacy have a high rate of cancer. The city has requested the federal government to order the railroad to clean its contaminated site.
The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of having its rail yard contaminated in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with carcinogenic chemicals to humans, such as creosote. Residents have claimed that the company has been trying to get rid of the pollution, but the proposal submitted to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.
The plume of groundwater below homes in the affected area is one of the most serious consequences of the contamination. A recent study by health officials has revealed that soil samples from the rail yard contain an increased amount of creosote than the recommended amount for drinking water.
Another issue is the slow escape of creosote from the atmosphere. As it does, it causes residents to breathe in dangerous levels of vapors, which are harmful to children as well as adults.
It is also possible that vapors are causing cancers in those who breathe them in. To learn Lung Cancer Lawsuit Settlements about the impact of the vapors on lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.
This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden communities. It's a pity and needs to be dealt with immediately.
A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia incidences were five times higher for children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more prevalent in these areas than elsewhere in Texas.
