Today at its huge WWDC keynote, Apple announced a few improvements to the Apple TV platform. New apps are coming to the platform include Sling TV (finally), Fox Sports, the French streaming service Molotov and the Minecraft: Story Mode game. Apple is also upgrading the remote app for your iPhone. The app is more similar to the hardware remote, and includes navigation using touch, Siri voice search, plus the ability to utilize the keyboard for input and game control using the accelerometer. The hardware itself is more similar to the remote. A new feature called "Live Tune In" will allow you to switch between livestreaming channels like ESPN, Disney, and many more. There's also a dark theme available, and Automatic App downloads mean that when you install a universal app on your iPhone or iPad and then install it on your Apple TV, it will be there on your Apple TV too.
Apple has also addressed the issue of a single sign-on for all of the network TV Everywhere apps. Just sign in with your info once, and you'll be able to authenticate in all apps that support it, which is applicable to the Apple TV and also mobile iOS devices.
Once a user is signed to one app from a network and then any other app that is available on Apple TV from participating pay-TV providers will automatically sign the user into all supported apps that require authentication.
Customers can browse a page listing the authentic apps available from a pay-TV provider to find the latest, download and stream their favorite video channels.
This technology can be utilized by any network-TV app to allow single sign-on and to make the process easier for their viewers.
Single sign-on is available on both Apple TV and iOS.
For developers, Apple's for developers, Apple's bringing HomeKit, ReplayKit and PhotoKit to TVOS. Developers can now connect home automation features to apps on the TV, pull pictures in from the photostream and much more. With ReplayKit (already available on iOS 9), they can record and live broadcast from within apps, so we might see Twitch-like features becoming popular on Apple TV, or maybe even DVR-like caching of live streams. A developer preview is rolling out today, with all the new features, and will be accessible to the rest of us by the end of this year.
