The metalcore band, Hatebreed has been around for a long time, and its members have gained fame through their touring. The frontman Jamey Jasta and his crew have a tradition of appearing at gargantuan rock festivals as well as packed clubs; their patented rock and metal mix has never been more relevant.
In 2002 they released their second LP Perseverance. This album provided them with an experience of mainstream success. It also cemented them as the most popular metalheads' names. Since that time, the band has been releasing a regular release of albums and never slowed down. The latest album, 2020's Weight of the False Self is exactly in the same manner as previous releases.
The Connecticut band stopped by Pop's on the last Friday of June to celebrate the anniversary of the album which brought them such a huge amount of fame. The band was a full-lineup featuring guitarists Frank Novinec, Brian Vollrath and drummer Chris Harris on stage.
I'd never paid the album Perseverance the attention it deserved prior to the show last week and any preconceptions I may have held against the band based on its recordings in the studio were swept away when they were on stage. Hatebreed merch is a lively, entertaining singer. He bantered with the crowd between songs and thanked the fans who turned out to support the band.
The band hasn't stopped focusing on its distinctive brand of hardcore punk They've refined their craft to where they're able to deliver the most epic performances. The album Weight of the False Self is an evidence of this because it's a collection of incredibly memorable songs and heart-stopping breakdowns.
It also is a journey into new lyrical terrain that could be viewed as cliché, but it actually works in Hatebreed's favor. The lyrics of the album include "Divinity of Purpose", "This I Earned" and "The Dark Side", tell the story of someone who's caught between the 'light' and the dark side..
