What Is Railroad Workers And Why Is Everyone Talking About It?
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to clean up the creosote sludge that is buried at its rail yard that is contaminated. And now, the latest tests have revealed that the contamination may still be affecting people who live nearby.

Researchers believe it could be linked to the increased cancer rates in the area. Two years after launching an all-state health investigation, researchers found that there were higher than anticipated rates of childhood lymphoblastic and adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the vicinity of the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote is a common chemical used in the treatment of wood. It is also a toxic substance that can cause cancer when exposed to it.

It is a dense, oily substance that is black or amber-colored and has a smoky odor and a burnt taste. It is a distillation of coal product that has been used for more than 150 years as a wood preserver.

In the United States, it is used to treat railroad ties and other kinds of wood, including fence posts, utility poles and marine pilings. It is also used to guard log structures and homes against decay and insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says that creosote may be a hazardous chemical. Exposure to creosote for short periods can result in skin and eye irritation, chemical burns stomach pains, burning of the mouth or throat and liver or kidney problems and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure can lead to skin and scrotum tumors. This is a serious issue for those who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes.

According to the EPA, it is a probable human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked to various cancers that include esophageal aswell lung cancer.

Houston's Fifth Ward residents have been exposed for decades to creosote, due to a railroad yard right next to their homes. They claim that the chemical has affected their soil, homes and continues to spread underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the effort to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They are demanding that the company test for contamination regularly and take preventative measures to stop the spread.

In October of 2017, a group comprised of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They claim that creosote emitted from the former rail yard is contaminating the soil beneath their homes , causing significant health problems.

Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts are seeking compensation for their ailments and suffering and damages from railroads for the cost of cleanup and other associated costs. They claim they are harmed by environmental racism and discrimination, and other kinds of pollution that have adversely affected their families and friends.

Dioxin

Dioxins are a class of chemicals that don't break down quickly in the environment and they can be found in the soil, air, or in sediment for a long period of. They can come from a variety of sources, including natural catastrophes, industrial accidents smoking cigarettes, and the incineration process of hazardous waste.

Although the effects of dioxin on health at low levels aren't well-studied yet, there is evidence suggesting that they can trigger serious diseases like cancer. Patients who are exposed at higher levels are believed to be at risk of organ cancers, heart disease as well as immune system issues and endocrine disorders including hormonal imbalances. They can also lead to hormonal problems, suppressed immunity and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most common method that people are exposed dioxin is through food or drinking water. They are not volatile or water-soluble so they are more easily taken in by the body through the consumption of meat, dairy products as well as fish and other seafood.

It is crucial to keep in mind, however, that exposure to chemicals can have a detrimental effect on your health, depending on many factors such as how much you drink, eat and the frequency with which you breathe. You should also take into consideration your gender and age, nutritional status, and family traits to determine whether you will be exposed to dioxins.

Furthermore, the kind of contaminant is also an important aspect. The EPA states that certain toxic substances are more likely to have a negative impact on health than others. For example, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are more likely to have a negative impact on your health than creosote.

For Cancer Lawsuits , PCBs can damage a person's eyes, kidneys and liver. They also can harm the immune system and cause issues in the development of healthy teeth, bones, and bones.

For a long time, residents of Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens have been complaining about a string of cancer deaths that have been related to the Union Pacific rail yard, which is next to their homes. The announcement released on Friday by Houston's health department revealed that they found cancer-causing chemicals on surface samples near the rail yard. The announcement said that the results were not a good sign. Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he's going to take legal action against Union Pacific over the matter and said that a proposal that he submitted to Texas environmental regulators won't be sufficient in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

PCBs, also known as polychlorinated biphenyls, are harmful chemicals that have been used for more than 60 years in both consumer and industrial products. They were banned in 1979 after being proven to cause cancer, suppress the immune system, and impair learning.

When released into the environment, PCBs contaminate air, soil, and water in many areas of the world. They are strong binders of organic matter, and are transported easily and accumulated in the environment.

PCBs are a major issue for protecting the environment and public health. The EPA is adamant that they are a human carcinogen , and has demonstrated that they can cause cancer in lab animals.

Furthermore certain studies have found a link between PCBs to birth defects in children. This is especially relevant for children who are exposed to these chemicals while pregnant.

PCBs are most often ingested through food. Fish is the main source of exposure since they contain the highest amount of PCBs. However, PCBs can also be found in dairy and beef and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking water is another way to be exposed. This could be due to leaks or spills which could occur in electrical and other equipment.

Similarly, people can also be exposed to PCBs through breathing air or through the skin. These chemicals can cause the condition known as chloracne which is a mild, small yellow skin lesions that can be present for a period of weeks or years.

The effects of PCBs on human health are not fully understood. Some researchers have suggested they may cause liver and biliary tract cancer in humans, however more studies are needed to understand what this means for us.

The EPA is also investigating whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns. The low birth weight of newborns has been associated with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease later in life. In two studies, children who were born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a toxic metal and is found in many products, including paints, pipes, and food cans. Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts is absorbed into the body via two main routes: respiratory and oral.

It is a powerful antioxidant and can react with other chemicals in the environment. This could cause it to build up in the body , and could lead to serious health problems such as cancer and other ailments.

In Houston the residents who live near a creosote treatment plant run by Union Pacific Railroad have a high rate of cancer. The city has requested the federal government's assistance in cleaning up the railroad's toxic site.

The Union Pacific Railroad has a history of contamination of its rail yard in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens neighborhood with chemicals that are carcinogenic to humans, including creosote. Residents claim that the railroad has been trying to get rid of the pollution, but the plan presented to Texas Commission on Environmental Quality was not enough.

One of the most important issues that resulted from the contamination is the plume of groundwater that is located beneath homes in the region. A recent study by the health department shows that the concentration of creosote in soil samples in the rail yard is much higher than the levels recommended for drinking water.

Another concern is that creosote is slowly disappearing into the air. It can cause residents to breathe dangerous levels of vapors, which could cause death for children and adults.

It is also possible that gases are causing cancers in the residents who breathe the vapors in. To find out more about the effects of the vapors' effects on the lives of residents there is a door-to door survey being done in the neighborhood.

This is a serious issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a terribly sad situation that must be addressed as soon as possible.

A recent study conducted by the Department of State Health Services discovered that children who lived in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighborhoods contracted a type of leukemia at a five times higher rate than expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more common in the neighborhood than elsewhere in Texas.
