Railroad Workers Tools To Simplify Your Daily Life
Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

For decades, neighbors in Houston's Fifth Ward have argued the company hasn't done enough to clean up an underground plume of creosote at its rail yard that is contaminated. And now, the most recent tests have revealed that the contamination may continue to affect people who live nearby.

Researchers say it may be related to elevated cancer rates in the region. Two years into a state-wide health investigation, they found higher-than-expected rates of childhood lymphoblastic Leukemia and adult renal and kidney pelvis cancers within the communities around the Union Pacific site.

Creosote

Creosote which is a common chemical that is used to treat wood is also a typical one. Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts can also cause cancer in people who are exposed to it.

It is a dense oily substance, from amber to black in color. It has a smokey scent and a burnt taste. It is a coal-tar distillation product that has been used for over 150 years as a wood preserver.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad ties, and other types woods, like fence posts and utility poles, and pilings from marine construction. It is also employed to protect log homes and other structures from insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that creosote may be a hazardous chemical. In Railroad Injury Settlement Amounts of exposure to creosote for a short periods of time can cause irritation to the eyes and skin, chemical burns, stomach discomfort, burning of the mouth or throat, kidney or liver problems, and even permanent damage.

Long-term exposure can lead to skin and scrotum carcinomas. Workers who come in direct contact with it during wood treatment or other manufacturing processes are susceptible to cancer.

According to the EPA it is a likely human cancer-causing agent. It has been linked with several cancers, including esophageal as well lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote over the years, thanks to an old rail yard located near their homes. The chemical is said to have caused soil and homes to be contaminated, and it continues to spread throughout the underground.

The city of Houston and Harris County have joined the campaign to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They are requesting that the company tests regularly for contamination and take measures to prevent the spread of the disease.

In October of 2017 the group of Fifth Ward neighbors sued Union Pacific. They allege that creosote from the former rail yard is contaminating soil beneath their homes and is causing significant health issues.

They are seeking compensation for their illness and suffering, as well as damages from railroads for the cost of cleaning and other costs. They also claim that they are affected by environmental racism and discrimination, as well as other kinds of pollution that have impacted them and their families.

Dioxin

Dioxins are chemicals which do not break down quickly in the environment and they can remain in the air, water, or sediment for a long period of time. They can come from a variety of sources, such as natural disasters, industrial accidents, cigarette smoke and incineration of hazardous waste.

The health effects of dioxin are not clear at low levels, however there is evidence that suggests they can cause cancer and other serious diseases. People who are exposed to higher levels are believed to be at greater risk of heart disease, organ cancers, immune system problems and endocrine disorders, such as hormonal imbalances. Railroad Workers can also lead to problems with hormones, immune suppression and diabetes, menstrual issues and weight loss.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency the most popular way people are exposed to dioxin is through drinking or eating. They are not liquid or volatile, which means they are more likely to be taken into the body via the consumption of dairy products or fish and other seafood.

It is important to remember, however, that exposure can have a detrimental effect on your health, depending on many aspects, such as the amount you eat, drink, and the frequency you breathe. It is also important to consider your gender, age and diet, nutritional status and family characteristics and other health factors that may affect whether you are affected by dioxins or not.

The kind of contaminant used is also crucial. According to the EPA, some toxins are more dangerous than others for human health. Polychlorinated biphenyls, also known as PCBs, are more likely than creosote to negatively impact your health.

PCBs can cause damage to the eyes and kidneys, liver, and kidneys. They can also damage the immune system of a person, and affect the development of healthy teeth and bones.

Houston's Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighbors have complained for years about a cluster cancer deaths connected to the Union Pacific rail yard. The yard is next to their homes. The city's health department reported on Friday that it found cancer-causing chemical compounds in surface samples near the rail yard. The release said the results were not encouraging. Mayor Sylvester Turner told FOX 26 that he plans to sue Union Pacific over the matter and that a plan that he submitted to Texas environmental regulators wouldn't be adequate in light of the findings.

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)

Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) are harmful chemicals that have been used in industrial and household products for more than 60 years. PCBs were banned in 1979, after they were found to cause cancer, weaken the immune system, and hinder learning.

PCBs can cause contamination of soil, water, and air in many parts around the globe after they are released into the environment. They are extremely binders to organic matter and tend to remain in the environment for a long time and therefore, are simple to transport and accumulate in the environment.

As a result, PCBs constitute a major risk for the protection of health and safety of people and the environment. They are regarded as a possible human carcinogen by EPA, and have been demonstrated to cause cancer in lab animals.

Certain studies also link PCBs to birth defects in children. This is particularly the case for children who've been exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy.

The most common route for exposure to PCBs is through food. Since they are the most abundant in PCBs Fish is the primary source of exposure. However, PCBs can also found in beef, dairy products, and other agricultural products.

Showering and drinking PCB-contaminated water is another way to be exposed. This could be due to leaks or spills in electrical and other equipment.

Similar to this, people may be exposed to PCBs through breathing air or through the skin. These chemicals can trigger the condition known as chloracne which is a tiny, pale, yellow skin lesions that can last for weeks or even years.

The effects of PCBs on the human body are not fully comprehended. Researchers have suggested that they could cause liver and biliary cancers in humans. However, more research is needed to discover how this impacts us.

EPA is also studying whether these chemicals may cause birth defects in newborns, like low birth weight. A low birth weight has been associated with insulin resistance or Type II diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases later in life. In two studies, children born with higher levels of PCBs in their cord blood had lower body weight at birth, and/or later in childhood.

Lead

Lead is a poisonous metal that is found in many products, such as pipes, paints, and food cans. Cancer Lawsuits can be absorbed by the body through two major routes: respiratory and oral.

It is a potent chemical that is oxidizing and can react with other substances in your environment. This can lead to it accumulating in the body and can lead to serious health problems such as cancer and other diseases.

In Houston residents living near a legacy creosote treatment plant owned by Union Pacific Railroad have a high rate of cancer. The city has requested the assistance of the federal government in cleaning up the railroad's toxic site.

Union Pacific Railroad has a past history of affected its Fifth Ward rail yard and Kashmere Garden neighborhood with chemicals that could cause cancer. The company has been working to remove the contamination, but the plan submitted to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is not sufficient residents claim.

One of the major problems that resulted from the contamination is the groundwater plume beneath homes in the area. A recent study by health officials has shown that soil samples from the rail yard have a higher concentration of creosote than the recommended amount for drinking water.

Another reason to be concerned is that the creosote is slowly escaping into the air. It causes residents to breathe toxic levels of vapors, which can cause fatalities for children and adults.

It is possible that the vapors could cause cancer among those who inhale them. A door-to door health survey is being conducted in the area to find out more about how the vapors affect the residents' lives.

This is a major issue for the Fifth Ward communities and Kashmere Gardens. This is a very sad situation that must be dealt with immediately.

A Department of State Health Services study found that leukemia incidences were five times higher for children living in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Gardens areas than was expected. The study also revealed that adult cancers were more common in these areas than elsewhere in Texas.
