Hbo Building Blocks serves as an encyclopedia, a collection of mechanisms that shows the thought and effort put into video game development. hbomerch provides guidance for designing games and focuses on elements of mechanics which make a game successful.
The book is divided in two sections: Discussions & Descriptions. This balances objective observations and hard definitions. The format is effective, except in a couple of instances where the Discussions were not in line with the Descriptions.
This is great for anyone studying video game design or who wants to know more about the process of creating an effective game. It's an enjoyable, informative book and I recommend purchasing a copy for you library.
Building Blocks authors are also board game developers, so their advice to video game designers is influenced heavily by their own experience with the design of games. This is a positive thing as it demonstrates the authors' commitment to their fields and allows readers to learn about them while reading the book.
The book is very readable, and I'm grateful for that. Building Blocks contains a diagram of each mechanism. This helps to make them easier for you to understand. Daniel Solis has also created some very beautiful illustrations.
A second aspect of the book includes a selection of sample game that demonstrates the mechanics or style of each of the mechanisms. This is a great reference for anyone who has trouble understanding the mechanism. This is something I'd like to see other books incorporate as they create more content.
Building Blocks differs from other books that discuss game design by not including the usual quotes, citations and opinion surveys. Instead, the book explains how each component is important to the game and what its role is. This isn’t something that I would expect to find in an encyclopedia.
The book is also filled with other useful features, which may make it a valuable resource for game developers. There is a section on Motor Systems, which describes the basics of cars. The section has a diagram that shows the movement of cars.
