How To Know If You're Prepared For Best Wireless Over Ear Headset
The Best Wireless Over Ear Headset

Over-ear headphones, unlike earbuds completely enclose your ears and can block out any sound from outside. Choose headphones that feature active noise cancellation as well as a battery that can last at minimum 20 hours with music playing.

The Sennheiser Momentum 4s feature an excellent ANC feature, a convenient control for the ear, and an easy-to-use app. The default sound is an energizing thump. However, vocals and instruments can be put in the background.

1. Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony's WH-1000XM5 headphones are a great pair of headphones for those who want to experience the most wireless over-ear headset. They're lightweight with a soft carrying case that folds flat for easy storage in your bag. The controls are easy to use and intuitive and their battery lasts an impressive 30 hours with ANC shut off. They also have an auto-pause feature that shuts off your headphones when they're removed from your head to conserve battery.

The WH-1000XM5 are compatible with Sony's Headphones Connect app which offers an array of features and can be used to tailor your audio experience. The app allows you to monitor your location and alter ambient sound features based on your surroundings. The microphone is also integrated for hands-free calls. The Sony WH1000XM5 can play music wirelessly using Bluetooth or wired using the cable that comes with. They include aptX codecs and aptX HD codecs, and adaptive codecs to play high-quality audio via Bluetooth.

The WH-1000XM5 comes with the same headband and earcups as the XM4 however it is more lightweight and comfortable. wireless over the head headphones to wear for long periods of time and are comfortable enough for commutes and longer flights. They're noise-cancelling headphones that can cut down background noise but not sacrifice clarity or clarity. The Sony WH1000XM5 headphones offer an excellent amount of bass, particularly for a closed-back pair. They also offer excellent soundstages and clear separation between vocals and instruments.

The low latency is an enormous plus. The lag is so minimal that it's almost imperceptible, and they can also be used for casual gaming. They're not the best for gaming in a competitive manner however they're perfect for those who want to use them for media consumption or to make hands-free calls.

Sony is committed to incorporating smart features into its products, and the WH-1000XM5 is not a different. The active noise cancellation is among the best I've tried and they include a whole set of smart functions to enhance the overall listening experience. They also include Sony's DSEE Extreme engine which upscales compressed music to near high-res quality. They're compatible with Sony's LDAC technology which streams music with higher quality via Bluetooth.

2. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

Since the introduction of its first-generation PX7 in 2015, Bowers & Wilkins' flagship headphones have been regularly featured on top wireless headset lists which puts them in the same class as the likes of Sony WH-1000XM5 and Bose's QuietComfort. Its newest model, the PX7 S2, is an upgrade that takes the first headphones to the next level with better ANC performance and a refreshed design.

In the earcups, the 40mm bio cellulose drivers are designed to be angled so that they point straight towards your eardrums to deliver an audio experience that's more intimate than other closed-back headphones. This is a bold claim however the PX7 S2 is able to deliver on. The vocals are clear and the bass is deep when it's needed.

The PX7 S2 also performs very well when it comes to voice calls, with a clear and crisp audio that doesn't overpower your own voice. The PX7 S2 is also able to provide a quick charge, which can bring you back to full capacity in just two hours. They are also compatible with high-resolution music thanks to the aptX adaptive Bluetooth codesc, which allows them to play 24-bit audio.

The noise-canceling technology and the improved audio performance are the most important improvements for the majority of listeners. In our tests we were able to eliminate a majority of the simulated aircraft noises with the PX7 S2. They also performed well in Mozart's Et In Carnatus Est and Sanctus which offer excellent insight into the changing dynamics between the solo vocal, the wind trio and orchestral accompaniment.

Alongside in addition to ANC, the PX7 S2s come with a variety of other features that make them very competitive with other top-rated noise-canceling headphones. They're wireless and have Bluetooth multipoint support, so you can pair them with two devices at once, and they include a built-in microphone which allows hands-free calling using your phone's assistant. They're also extremely robust, with premium-feeling and durable construction that will last for years of continuous usage.

Of course they're not 100% perfect. The clamp force on our test models was a bit less than we'd like, and there aren't as many additional features in the app as other options, but these aren't major complaints. The PX7 S2s are an excellent wireless headphone that is among the best in their class, and it's hard to imagine them being beaten by any other competitor.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

For audiophiles who prize high fidelity and are looking for an exceptional wireless noise-canceling headset The Focal Bathys are tough to beat. They're the French audio company's very first ANC headphones to use Bluetooth and provide incredible sound in both Bluetooth mode and when connected to an device via USB for hi-fi audio with up to 24 bit/192kHz (the headphone is also capable of passively blocking external audio with its closed ear cups).

The Bathys are gorgeous with their black glossy finish and swooping curves reminiscent of Focal's premium open-back Elear and closed-back Celestee headphones. The Bathys are built with premium materials like magnesium and aluminum that makes them feel solid and comfortable. They are also worth the cost.

The Bathys Bluetooth headphones offer crisp, vibrant sound signature. They easily outperform consumer ANC devices of similar price like the Sony XM5/5 and Bose QC45. Direct DAC audio mode lets them be pushed further which makes them a fantastic choice for true hifi enthusiasts.

Utilizing the Focal & Naim app users can alter the playback controls on their headphone, virtual assistant, and Bluetooth pairing preferences. The app lets users choose between quiet and soft intensities for ANC. Users can also alter the brightness of LEDs on the earcups of the headphones, and adjust the EQ settings. The app is fairly bare-bones but offers enough functionality to warrant its purchase.

The only issue is the active noise cancellation, which isn't able to live in the same way as the other models. The headphone does not eliminate all ambient noise as well as the highly rated XM5 and AirPods Max. Its treble accuracy also falls short and has a muddy mid-to-high range that takes away from vocals and instruments.

The Focal Bathys headphones aren't particularly transportable. They're not ideal for travel since their earcups don't fold and they weigh more than other models. The Bathys should be used at home for long listening sessions or as an audio reference headset for sound engineering. Despite their size and bulk they Bathys are extremely comfortable to wear for extended durations of time.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WHCH720N is a great pair of wireless over ear headsets for the price. The noise cancelling technology is fantastic and helps to cut down the background noise. They are great for commuters or travellers. Their matte finish and sturdy construction give them a touch of high-end quality.

They are similar to Sony's XB910N and 1000X headphone models. They have a slim headband, with the standard earcup hinges, and a durable plastic build. They are light and comfortable, but they're a bit tight for my taste. They come with a USB-C charge port, 3.5mm jack and a decent-length cable inside the box. They support multipoint Bluetooth which means that you can connect to two devices at once should you wish to.

In my tests, the CH720N's hybrid noise-cancelling tech did great job of reducing ambient noise, with only few noticeable blips in walking around Waterloo station and London Victoria. These weren't magical sound-silencers which blocked out every sound, however, they struggled with lower frequency noises like the rumbling engine sounds of trains and buses.

The CH720N's Bluetooth connection was smooth and displayed a low harmonic distortion. I tried a range of genres and found they could handle the intricate interplay between instruments well. It did an impressive job of controlling the bass in rock tracks and keeping the mix focused.

The Sony Headphones Connect App allows users to modify the CH720N's multipoint connection and ANC settings to your liking. You can also choose from a range of audio presets. You can also enable DSEE through the app, which enhances sound quality and upsacles compressed audio content.

The WH-CH720N offers a great value for PS130. It's not equipped with many of Sony's most popular features (such as Speak-to-Chat and Fast Attention) but it has a lot of great features. 360 Reality Audio, smart controls and the DSEE upscaling are all present. The only thing missing is LDAC Bluetooth High-Res Audio Support which I believe would have been a great inclusion.
