How a Coffee Machine Works

The Hot-Water Tube

There's a small aluminum tube in your coffee maker which connects the reservoir with the faucet/shower head (also called the showerhead). When you press the button to make a coffee, the heating element is activated and water starts to flow through the machine. The tube is insulated to keep the water hot while it moves from one section to another.

Sensors turn the water off and on after it has reached the reservoir, ensuring that it is at the ideal temperature for coffee extraction, which is 195-205 degrees F. Some machines have a built-in temperature probe to ensure that the water never fails to reach the right temperature.

The water then turns into steam, and then flows through the hole in the bucket. The steam then flows through coarse coffee grounds that are put in a basket on top of the machine.
