When someone you dearly loved dies, that could be the hardest heartbreak you may have in life. We know that everyone of us will pass away and the only thing we should do when someone we love died is to move on with our life.

I first became aware that death - for anyone - is never far away when a sixth grade playground chum committed suicide. I had been aware that old people died - but "old" had seemed very remote to my twelve year old self. Instantly death became very real - something that could, and did, happen to anyone.

Take a moment to tally up the debts and bills you have to pay each month to keep your family in a home, clothed, well fed and the like. The numbers can be pretty scary. Now take a moment to think about how those bills would be paid if you passed away today. Perhaps you are hit by a drunk driver. Perhaps you have a massive heart attack, the number one killer in America these days. The actually cause doesn't really matter. It is what comes after your death that really hammers your family.

Flowers and plants can be a beautiful expression of how to remember the beauty that person brought to your life. So, choose your arrangement accordingly.

The paradox of our life, understood by faith in Jesus, is that we who are alive here and now, are actually living in the shadows. Our loved ones who have died and gone before us, are fully alive, living in the presence of God. They will not return to us here and now - rather we must go forward to meet them and the Lord. The reunion to come will not be a temporary one such as at Nain, leading to another separation - rather it is the final and complete reunion, no more tears, no more goodbyes. Forever together in the Lord. Total healing.


Having a happy funeral is more memorable than a sad one. It can become a family celebration that starts new cherished memories and increases bonding. They family grows stronger as they get over this very difficult time by leaning on each other and enjoying each other instead of gathering together to be sorrowful. Traditional funeral are dark and quiet besides the sound of weeping there is a certain air of limitation about them in the expression of emotions. Let the funeral be out of the ordinary and let the mourners be free to express joy over the person that they loved.

The old handyman was a familiar sight in Eagan Creek. Dressed in his usual attire, faded bib overalls, a plaid flannel shirt and a sweat-stained brown fedora, folks treated him more so as an oddity than as a hired workman. Yet he was a capable worker, even at seventy-one years, lean of body, hair nearly white. Somehow, he managed a meager existence, watching his pennies, working a half-day here, an hour there.

Death glances back at the wide swath of ashes that marks her path through the forest. She raises her hands to the skies and shouts an incantation. A single tear glistens on her cheek before the lightning strikes. And then she's gone.
