Affidavit
A written declaration that is signed under oath by a party in the presence of a notary public or oath commissioner is classified as an affidavit. There is no general defined form for an affidavit, though it must satisfy legal or statutory requirements in order to be considered. It is also used as evidences during court hearings. If the respondent replies in the form of another affidavit, then it is termed as counter-affidavit.

Appeal
In terms of law, when parties ask for a formal revision to an official decision, the procedure by which their case is evaluated by a higher authority is known as an appeal. The purpose of appeals is to clarify and interpret the law while also serving as a mechanism for correcting errors.

Arbitration
An alternate method of settling the disputes between two parties without going to judiciary courts is termed as arbitration. Arbitration is often used for the resolution of commercial disputes, particularly in the context of international commercial transactions.

Attestation
The authentication of a signature by an authorized person, who could be an oaths commissioner or a notary public, is stated as attestation. It is a legal acknowledgment of the authenticity of a document and a kind of verification that processes were followed properly.

Bench
Basically, the term bench can be understood as the sitting composition of judges who will hear the case in court. Judges in the High Court may sit alone, in division benches of two judges, or in full benches of three or more judges. In Supreme Court, the vacation judge or judge in chambers may sit singly; division benches comprise two or three judges; constitution benches five or more judges.

Cause List
CLAT 2024 related to the case such as courtroom number, bench, current status of the matter or case and so on is defined in the cause list. It is issued by the registry on the matters to be heard by the court on any day.

Cognizable Offence
Those offences in which the police can arrest the accused without a warrant and can also begin an investigation without the permission of the court are calledas cognizable offenses. These offences are both bailable, and non-bailable. There is a law in Indian constitution that states that an offence that is punishable with death, imprisonment for life, or imprisonment for more than 3 years shall be cognizable.

Contempt of Court
The crime of disobeying or being disrespectful towards the court of law and its officers in the form of oppose or deny to their authority, justice, and dignity of the court is classified as contempt of court. Under the Contempt of Courts Act, 1971 this is defined as ’civil contempt’. Each court has the power to punish anyone committing contempt of a court.

Intervener
With the permission of the court, a person who is not a party but can somehow get affected with result of the case is allowed to interfere in the proceedings of the case and can claim a right to hearing in the interest of justice, is considered as intervener.

Issue Notice
When a Court decides to hear a case, the respondents are asked to explain why the case should not be admitted (show cause). This is accomplished by sending a notice to the respondents with the details of the case and the next date of hearing, as well as a copy of the petition.

Stay Order
A stay of proceedings or stay order can be stated as a command given by the court of law to stop the further legal process in a trial or other legal proceedings for a specific period of time. A stay order can postpone the hearing of a case to an indefinite period of time.

Vakalatnama
To act, appear and plead as an advocate in front of the court on the behalf of any party is done by a document called vakalatnama.

Writ & Writ Petition
An order by a higher court to a lower court or courts, directing them to do something in a specific way is known as writ petition. It is a kind of written command in the name of court.
