The death of a pet can be very unsettling for preschoolers. They may immediately cry at finding out about the death or they may have no reaction at all. It will depend on their age, developmental stage and exposure to death at this point in their lives. They see and hear about death through television or hearing others talk about it, however, many times, the death of a pet is a child's first encounter with death.

At some point we decided that the practice of human sacrifice is unacceptable, and so we did away with the practice. Of course this did not happen all at once. Human beings are spread out all over the world, and so certain groups of people took longer than others to do away with the practice. Assuming, of course, they practiced human sacrifice in the first place. Other variables come into play. Dueling was another form of accepted killing that has since been done away with. At one time it was acceptable for two people to settle their differences by fighting to the death.

What do you plan to do about food? Do you wish to have someone cater the funeral? This might be a good way of helping everyone feel a bit better. The funeral will be very emotional, having a little snack to eat might help some of the guests to the funeral.

People are unsure of what death really is. They believe no one knows what happens after death. Not understanding what comes after death scares them. Do we fade off into nothingness or do we live on in another form? They are unsure whether they did everything right to merit an afterlife. Which brings us to the next reason we fear death.

To explain: the Jewish mentality two thousand years ago, and quite possibly still today, emphasised the importance of family, and especially valued its spread and prosperity - 'go forth and multiply'. In particular, God's blessing was directly linked to the growth of the family, and happy the man who had many offspring, and of course, importantly, many sons. Plenty sons were the clearest indicator that the family name would continue and prosper. This poor woman had suffered a compound tragedy and was doubly cursed (by God): her husband being dead, she could have no more sons, and now her only son had died, meaning that her family line was finished. Her life was as good as over. God had abandoned her - total disaster, with no hope of any resolution.

I choose to overcome my instinctive fear of the unknown. All humans naturally fear the unknown. I will fight that fear every day - and I will win. In winning my battle with fear, I win my freedom and my happiness.




How you react to all of this is going to teach your child how to deal with loss and grief for the rest of their lives. Approach it all with love, honesty and understanding and you'll be on the right track.
