Drawing of him and this Sir Stamford Raffles conceptualised the idea of establishing a premier educational institution in Singapore in September 1819. One of the objectives of the institution, as envisaged by Raffles, was to provide the children of the Malay nobility and Chinese entrepreneurs with an education.
Raffles instituted the administration of justice to ensure peace and order in the thriving settlement. He founded the Resident Court, appointed magistrates, and implemented trial by jury. In addition, he instituted the abolishment of activities such as public gambling, slavery and cock-fighting.
Guillemard made his first official visit to the state of Johor. The occasion was the beginning of construction of the Causeway across the Strait of Johor. From aboard the governor’s yacht, Sea Belle, Guillemard released 500 tons of granite rubble into the Straits.11 Thus was laid the foundation of the road and railway track that would connect Singapore with Malaya (now Malaysia) till today. The Causeway was officially opened on 28 June 1924.12
