The death of a pet can be very unsettling for preschoolers. They may immediately cry at finding out about the death or they may have no reaction at all. It will depend on their age, developmental stage and exposure to death at this point in their lives. They see and hear about death through television or hearing others talk about it, however, many times, the death of a pet is a child's first encounter with death.

The people are all so afraid of Death. They want to live forever. They hate Death. How could they not? Death is frightening, to be sure. It always wins. And it will come for everyone eventually, because no one can cheat Death.

Below is a proposed time line for the death of our loved one. As you are now aware, death can be a surprise or a peaceful ending to a long life. The time periods of the dying experience below was developed by Barbara Karnes, RN which is called "Gone from my Sight" and given to us during hospice. It gave me much comfort during my mother's dying process which is divided into four time periods. The periods listed below are only an approximation.

Based on our experience, there was nothing more thoughtful that Grandma could have done. In the hour of humanity's greatest stress, Grandma had already lessened the trauma of dealing with funeral arrangements. And realistically, who better to make all the choices than her?

Despite one remaining adult child, I often feel like the parent of an only child, and this surpises me. Therese A. Rando, PhD writes about identity in her book, "How to Go on Living When Someone You Love Dies." Grieving parents are in transition, Rando notes, and have to adjust to a new world. Language changes from "we" to "I," for example. Aspects of personality are lost and new aspects are found. According to Rando, bereaved parents need to reinvest their energy in other people and pursuits.

The Gathering. This precious time was limited to family and closest friends. It was held in an informal setting arranged at the funeral home to share more stories and memories about Mom. It was a time of celebration for the special person she was to each of us.
