The Expanse is an incredible series, and it has one of the best sci-fi storylines ever told. theexpansemerch -inspiring scale of the solar system, coupled with its escalating climaxes, made every episode of this Amazon series a treat to watch.

Sadly, that has all come to an end with Season 6 of the series. That’s not to say that the final season is bad, but it doesn’t have the same grandiosity that The Expanse cultivated throughout its run.


While the first five seasons of The Expanse thrived by capturing the vastness of space, it didn’t have time to fully explore all the intricacies of the solar system, relying on propulsive action to drive its storytelling. In the end, it felt like the show was operating in a war story rather than a deep-dive into the universe that James S. A. Corey built.

It’s hard to fault the writers for that — they understand the need to build up the world and their characters’ motivations. But too often, they drop that in favor of lazy backroom sex scenes for Filip or a blink-and-you-miss-it apology from Holden.

Another thing that sets this series apart from most other science fiction shows is the way it tackles gravity. It’s a major factor in the series, and one that can be scary if not properly handled. Whether it’s a reversal of gravity or a tin-can claustrophobic atmosphere, the show is always trying to show how difficult it can be to move through space.

The show’s best moments are when it puts characters in a position to make tough decisions. It’s also an example of how a sci-fi series can capture a sense of enormity without feeling like it’s overstating the scope or overshooting its goals.

That’s a great achievement for any genre, but it’s especially impressive when you consider how often other sci-fi shows – and even some of its own competitors – seem to be going the opposite direction.


With The Expanse, it’s hard to get away from the fact that Earth and the Belter nations are in conflict over who has the best colony planet. The latest episode, “The Azure Dragon,” is no exception to this rule, as the Rocinante crew and their allies must battle the Earth-based mining company and its hard-assed security chief to seize control of a colony world called Ilus.

Despite that, the series is still one of the best examples of a war story that has never quite been done right. The writing nimbly navigates its way through each battle, but it doesn’t have the time to really flesh out all of the intricacies of these factions’ goals.
