Longer small group discussions known as Critical Incident Stress Debriefing . These structured group discussions are usually provided one to 10 days after a crisis to mitigate acute symptoms, assess the need for follow-up and, if possible, provide a sense of post-crisis psychological closure. This course provides an overview of trauma and its multilevel effects on development and physiology, interpersonal relationships, family systems, and societies. A conceptual framework of evolving perspectives of traumatic stress, as well as education about the ethnocultural milieu, is provided. Numerous sources of trauma, including child maltreatment, domestic violence, sexual assault, terrorism, armed conflict, and natural disasters are explored. Risk and protective factors are considered within the context of local, national and international efforts to reduce or respond to crises and other traumatic events, from both logistical and systems perspectives.

Volunteer crisis counselors that operate these hotlines assist you confidentially. They are trained to listen to you, validate your feelings, and communicate with you "person to person" instead of treating you as a patient or victim. Crisis counselors use psychotherapy to help people, families, and groups cope with traumatic experiences and emotional turmoil—especially people who are engaging in self-harm or suicidal behaviors.
