Islam, Jesus' death and the Bible. This almost sounds like a mathematical equation. For me, an avid practitioner of inter-faith dialogue with Arab Muslims, this equation is quite scientific. Each variable in the equation has its place and significance. By Islam, I generally speak of what is written about Jesus in the Quran; though I am careful to understand that there can be a big difference between what is written in the book and what the religion of Islam may teach. By Jesus death I refer to the crucifixion and death of Christ. Of note, the Muslim view of Jesus explicitly denies Christ's death and crucifixion. By the Bible I speak of the rest of the story.



Maybe the people of the old testament didn't know about eternal life. True, New Testament believers seem more ready to die, but there is Old Testament reference to eternal life and resurrection. Genesis 5: 24. Job 19:25 -26. Isaiah 26:19. Daniel 12:2.

We depend on the State to protect us. The State provides police and fire protection, military protection, and protection against criminals. The courts were set up for this very purpose, to confine and punish those who harm others. When the crime is sufficiently brutal to justify the death penalty, and the evidence is sufficient to convict, then the State has the authority and the right to execute. Of course it does.

Daniel Goleman, author of "Emotional Intelligence," thinks people who pursue their goals have less anxiety and distress. Though the last few weeks have been filled with distress I thought I was capable of identifying new goals. One goal was already clear. The instant our daughter died my husband and I dedicated ourselves to protecting and caring for our twin grandchildren. "There must be other goals," I said to myself.

Desire is rooted deep inside of your flesh; right down to the core of your heart. The reason desire is so deeply rooted is because flesh is not a "spiritual" force; that is to say flesh is not spiritual. It knows nothing but needs and wants. It does not reason, it only begs everyday for satisfaction. Essentially, your flesh wants to feel good and never feel bad (which is another fact that is so elementary, bible study groups neglect to point it out).


It offers you the opportunity to actually plan your funeral service well in advance. This then offers you the opportunity to decide how the service will run and the way in which you would like people to commemorate your life now you have gone.

Since we don't know whether our own demise will be lengthy or sudden, let's think about the peace that we want our loved ones to be left with. Let us love more each day. Let us pay it forward at every opportunity. Let us take more time for family and friends. Let us see more positive than negative in people and in situations. Let us put down the cell phone for a moment to appreciate what we see and hear. Death is inevitable, but the peace we leave is eternal.
