Avanos Medical recalls the Cortrak*2 enteral access system
According to the U.S. Avanos Medical Food & Drug Administration (FDA), Avanos Medical is recalling the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System because the misplacement of nasogastric or nasoente tubes has resulted in injury and death of patients. The recall currently includes 629 devices distributed in the United States.

Avanos has launched its Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System due to its interactive display of a patient's stomach , or small bowel to assist in the proper positioning of a medical feed tube. Patients may experience damage to their vocal chords or trachea, if the tube has been placed incorrectly. Avanos Medical's recall notice states that, since 2015 there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries resulting from misplacement nasogastric feed tubes when using the CORTRAK*2 enteral access system. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) or pneumothorax, perforation (a gap or hole within the wall of a lung), pneumonia, and the pleural effusion (excess liquid between the lungs, chest cavity) are a few of the injuries.

The Avanos warning was the second FDA warning in 2022 concerning tube feeding for enteral use. In February, the FDA issued a cautionary note to parents and healthcare professionals about the possibility of strangulation in the event that children are fed through feeding tubes. Two instances of strangulation in children involving feeding tubes wrapped around the necks of patients have been reported before 2021.
