Avanos Medical called off Cortrak* 2 EAS in response to the patient death and injuries caused by tube malfunctions.
Cortrak 2 eternal access system The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has identified the recall by Avanos Medical of Cortrak*2 Ental Access System, (EAS) as an I class recall.
A Class I recall is the most serious one out of the three classes.
Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos Medical recalls Cortrak*2 EAS after reports of injuries and death due to the wrong placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tubes.
This device can be used to assist trained healthcare professionals to insert medically-approved feeding tubes for patients. It also provides in real-time information regarding tube placement.
Incorrect placement of Nasogastric or nasoenteric tubes can cause serious injury or even the death of a patient.
The company recalls 629 devices, which were distributed across the US from April 1st, 2016 until 1 January 2022.
The communication regarding the recall from the company also stated that there have been sixty injuries and 23 deaths in patients since 2015 due to misplacement of Nasogastric feeding tubes that were used with the Cortrak* 2 EAS.
Avanos Medical, following the recall, will be updating the device's labelling. This will include updated instructions regarding the use and intended uses of the Cortrak*2 EAS.
These revised guidelines direct users to ensure that the tube is placed according to the institution's protocols prior to using the tube.
