Minecraft is a hugely popular game and seems to attract new fans on a daily basis. Parents who haven't yet joined the Minecraft movement may find it difficult to understand the language used by their children to describe their Minecraft play sessions. For instance, your child might say, "That mod gave sweet amounts of redstone in the Nether however the mobs were so aggressive I really wish I only had to contend with Creepers." Yikes!
It's time to learn some lingo. Here's a glossary of some of the most popular terms in Minecraft. It'll help you learn the basics of the game and provide you a quick introduction to the world of mining, brewing and crafting.
Biome. Biomes are regions within Minecraft that include forests, jungles, and deserts. They possess their own climatic and environmental characteristics, such as rain cycles, variations in grass or plant life and even geomorphological structures, such as rivers and mountains.
Creative/survival. Survival and creativity are two of the most popular game modes in Minecraft. The creative mode lets players to create whatever they want using unlimited blocks, and renders them invincible against would-be enemies. Survival mode is the normal game mode. Here, players need to collect resources, fight mobs, and explore in order to stay alive.
Creeper. Creepers are a feared and well-known mob that try to take advantage of players before they explode. The resultant blast causes significant damage to virtually everything and can be deadly when your focus is on other players.

Enderman. The Enderman is one of the most bizarre mobs that you can find in Minecraft. They are thin, tall creatures that play in pairs. They typically pick up and place blocks in random order. They could pose a danger to structures built by the player because they tear down your shelters. The Enderman are neutral and won't attack you unless you are attacked. If you stare at them, they will give you the business. Then they'll disappear until you kill them or neutralize them.
Mob. A mob is basically any living thing in the game. Certain mobs are passive such as horses and chickens, whereas others can be very aggressive, like Creepers.
Mod. Mod stands for mod and can be used to alter the game's content. Modification is a way to add new materials, modify design elements in creative mode, or to increase the difficulty level. Mods are user-created content which is not included in the initial installation and must be downloaded to be added into the game. Mods can be installed one at a time or in a bundle however, be aware that changing the game can cause it to stop functioning.
Mojang. Mojang is the creators and developers behind Minecraft was founded by Markkus Persson and Jakob Porser. The company was recently acquired by Microsoft for $2.5 billion.
Nether. The Nether is an alternative dimension of the Minecraft world which resembles a gruesome landscape. It's only accessible via a player-built entry called a portal. The Nether has plenty of environmental hazards, including lava and flames, as well as unique mobs. Many common materials and items are affected by the Nether and function completely differently from the world of normal (the "Overworld"), however, the Nether also has rare materials.
Pickaxe. Pickaxes are a typical Minecraft tool that is used to mine bricks to extract valuable materials. They can be made by the player, and may be further enhanced with distinct characteristics to enhance their performance.
Redstone. Redstone is one of the primary materials found in the world of Minecraft and is one of the most versatile materials available in the game. It can be used for crafting components and making potions. However, its most important characteristic is its capacity to power devices such as doors or lights, pistons and many other devices.
Sandbox. Sandbox is a game in video format that allows players to explore and alter the world with no limitations. In many ways, a sandbox game gives players the same tools as a designer of the game which allows them to change or alter the game to meet their specific needs. Minecraft is a sandbox game.
Server. A Minecraft server lets players engage in multiplayer games online. There are no two servers that are alike and they can be set to play specific types of games. These can range from team-based or solo-player-versus-solo-player combat to capture-the-flag and last-player-standing matches.
Skin. Skins are any texture that is placed on an avatar, mob, or any other object to allow players to customize the game. Skins don't bring any advantages or disadvantages, but they do add visual appeal to the game -- and can be almost anything you can think of. These have ranged from Avengers characters to Santa Claus and more.
Steve. The default male skin in the game. Steve is the name given to the playable character that players can control. Steve is a basic man wearing light blue shirt, gray shoes, blue jeans and dark hair.
