Apache - Marcus Povey

So, OwnCloud has been a fantastic way to share files between my various devices for quite some time. I've even learnt on How to Make a Minecraft Server, which has been a lot of fun. The server is a PHP application, which makes it fairly simple to set up.

Anyway, I updated my server to run PHP 7.3 which allows it to run the latest Known code, among other things. PHP 7.3 is the most current stable code that can be used by everyone.

This was a major issue since ownCloud could only run on PHP versions up to and including 7.2. Although PHP 7.3 will be supported in the coming version of ownCloud the release schedules are a bit slow and I needed to get my syncing back on track.

It is possible to use PHP 7.2 on the ownCloud server and PHP 7.3 on other applications.

Installing PHP-FPM

If you're using the old school mod_php apache module the first thing you must do is install PHP-FPM.

This is the most modern method of running PHP, and I was thinking of doing it regardless. Cobra planet It's faster, offers many more options to improve performance, and crucially for me, decouples Apache from PHP giving you the option of running different versions.

This is possible on Debian-based servers (mine is Debian with a third party PHP.7.3 apt repository). It's extremely simple:

You'll also need to install all the PHP modules you'll need (pdo, gd, etc) However, I'll leave that as an exercise for the reader.

Next, you want to switch over your config:

There are two points you should note. First replace the a2dismod file with the latest version of PHP. Also, you'll notice that I didn't turn on the PHP 7.2 FPM configuration. This is due to the fact that PHP 7.3 should be the default site, but PHP 7.2 can be enabled on select virtual hosts.

You should now be able to see something similar when you look up phpinfo()

Note the PHP version and the Server API.

If you look at your server's processes, you'll notice both PHP 7.3 and PHP 7.2 FPM servers running:

Configuring ownCloud's VirtualHost for PHP 7.2

So, now you need to modify your personal Cloud VirtualHost to make use of the PHP 7.2 fast CGI server.

Again, this is really really easy, and is pretty much a cut and paste from the php7.2-fpm.conf file you'll find in your /etc/apache2/conf-available directory.

The following should be included in your ownCloud's definition of virtual host

Now start phpinfo() on your ownCloud domain to check for PHP 7.2 running!

Now I can get back to synchronizing my files while running the latest PHP version for other domains.

This is a great feature that can be used to do more than slow software updates. For starters this technique lets me run a cutting-edge version of PHP like PHP 7.4 against for instance, my development version of Known, but keep my blog running the stable release.

Anyway, I thought it was cool. I hope you'll enjoy it as well!
