The Turkish government is investigating allegations that the popular computer game Minecraft is violent, according to reports.

The game is classified as suitable for children aged seven and older in a large portion of Europe as well as for those older than 10 in the United States. According to the Haberturk website Turkey's family and social policy minister, Aysenur Islamic, has ordered an investigation into claims that the game promotes aggression. If the site is deemed to be too violent, then the government could seek an all-out ban, the website says. The decision was inspired by a journalist who revealed to Mrs Islam that players earn points for killing other characters - which includes women - and asked what her ministry would be doing to address the issue. The Pan European Game Information group, which assigns ratings to computer games, says Minecraft contains "non-realistic-looking violence towards characters which, although human, are not very detailed".
One journalist from an Turkish gaming magazine claims the ministry's concerns are not based on fact. Kaan Gezer, an Leadergamer journalist, claimed that she has never seen an infant grab a sword and attack people because Minecraft. "Stories such as these make the Turkish video game industry to stall or even worsen." Minecraft is extremely popular among gamers of all age groups. In February 2014, it reached its 100 millionth user. It has also been used by teachers at a number of schools in the UK.
