If you are severely obese or overweight, you may be interested in weight loss without surgery. There are several options available, including gastric band and gastric bypass. You should consider each one carefully before deciding on which one is right for you. Before choosing a surgical procedure, learn as much as you can about the risks and side effects.
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty
Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasties are an option for people who want to lose weight without having to go under the knife. These procedures can be used to convert obese people into healthy individuals and can lead to a 15% to 20% reduction in total body weight over the course of twelve to twenty-four months. Endoscopic sleeve gastroplastied patients must adhere to strict medical requirements, including undergoing various lab tests and exams. They may also be asked to follow a strict physical activity plan.
The procedure lasts about 90 minutes, and most patients can go home the same day. However, some people may have to stay in the hospital for a few days. Although the procedure is not painful, some patients may experience nausea or vomiting for several days following the procedure. Also, sutures can loosen over time, particularly if the patient overeats or vomits, which can reduce the effectiveness of the procedure over time.
Gastric band
The gastric band is a surgical procedure to reduce the amount of food consumed. It's an inflatable silicone tube that's placed around the upper part of the stomach and connected to a port under the skin. The surgeon can adjust the tightness of the band with an injection of saline fluid through this port. This saline solution helps slow down the passage of food through the band.
The adjustable gastric band procedure was approved by the FDA in 2001. It's suitable for people with a BMI of 30 to 35. It's also a good option for those with comorbidities and obesity-related medical conditions, such as sleep apnea. Another benefit of this procedure is that it's an outpatient procedure. After the surgery, patients can go home the same day.
Orbera balloon system
The Orbera balloon system is a weight-loss alternative to traditional weight-loss surgery. It works by filling the stomach with saline solution to create a small balloon that takes the shape of the stomach. The balloon is then removed after about 16 weeks. Patients typically return home the same day. A slight sore throat may be experienced during the first few days after the procedure.
The Orbera balloon system is an FDA-approved, non-surgical weight-loss solution. It involves a simple, 20 to 30-minute outpatient procedure. The balloon, about the size of a grapefruit, is implanted in the stomach. The balloon is then removed in a similar way to how it was placed. The patient is then given coaching support for the next 12 months.
Gastric bypass
Gastric bypass is one of the most common weight-loss procedures, but it's not always necessary. A smaller stomach can be achieved without surgery by changing the shape of the stomach. By making the stomach smaller, your body can absorb more nutrients and fewer calories. It also decreases your feeling of hunger. Another benefit is better blood sugar control.
Gastric bypass involves making a small hole in the stomach, called the jejunum, to bypass a portion of the small intestine. Food will flow into the new pouch, bypassing the first half of the small intestine, and will be digested. However, it is not without risks. It changes your hormones, bacteria, and other substances in the gastrointestinal tract. A gastric bypass is also very difficult to reverse unless the surgery is medically necessary.
Duodenal switch
Duodenal switch is an effective method for weight loss without surgery. It uses the duodenum to replace a portion of the stomach. The weight loss that results from this procedure can be significant. The procedure is safe and produces minimal side effects. There is no need for dietary restrictions, and it leads to no clinical metabolic complications.
The procedure works by cutting the outer margin of the stomach, or duodenum, to create a small, tubular stomach. The surgeon then divides the first section of the small intestine into two sections - an alimentary limb connects to the stomach pouch, and a biliopancreatic limb separates the pancreas and gall bladder. The remaining portion of the small intestine connects to the duodenum and colon. This reduces the time that the body needs to capture calories and fat.
