Tokayev has been appointed Chairman of the National Security Council. He succeeds President Nursultan Nagayev, whose financial influence has angered protesters.

Three of the sons-in-law of the former president were removed from their state firms, while his nephew also was fired as well. Karim Masimov who was the former chief of intelligence, was taken into custody for treason.
