British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all of its exhibits.

The project is part of the Museum of the Future scheme, which aims to expand the institution's appeal.

Many real-life organisations have created maps within the Minecraft universe which includes Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, who aim to make youngsters more aware of their work.

This week, Minecraft was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokesperson for the museum stressed that the project was in "an initial planning phase" and that the "build" has not yet been completed.

She said that the organization plans to seek out members of the public to help with the "construction".

The British Museum

The first national museum of the nation was established in 1753.

The UK's most popular tourist attraction

Nearly six million visitors visit the museum every year. The museum has eight million items.

The Natural History Museum's collections were moved to a new location in South Kensington in the 1880s which would become the Natural History Museum

Its instantly easily identifiable Great Court was designed by Lord Foster and is the largest covered public area in Europe.

One employee from the British Museum posted details about the project on Reddit and requested volunteers.

The game received a rousing response from Minecraft fans around the globe.

Initial stages

Digitally creating the Great Court, facade and interior of the building is the first step in the process.

The institution hopes this stage will be ready in time for a public debate entitled changing public dialogues around museum collections in the digital age, which will take place on October 16.

Ovum's Ovum gaming analyst Ed Barton told the BBC that the British Museum's move towards Minecraft will make it "perceived to be a fun activity" and also serve as an educational tool for a young crowd.

He explained, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." It must be built brick by brick.

He said that the institution should be praised for crowdsourcing it "as this turns it into something collaborative" and can further draw in young Minecraft fans.

"What a cool project it is to be asked to construct the Elgin Marbles in Minecraft," he said.
