GPS SOS enables you to reach out to emergency services even when you're outside the range of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage.
Your iPhone tries to connect with emergency services via satellite when you're outside of cellular and Wi-Fi networks, using a global network of Iridium satellites. It sends a standardized SOS message to the nearest Iridium satellite, then automatically begins a text conversation with emergency responders by sharing critical information like Medical ID and emergency contact details, the answers to an emergency questionnaire and your remaining battery life.
You'll also get a confirmation that your SOS was received and that rescuers were notified. This interactive SOS is a new level of service not offered by one-way devices such as SPOT Gen4 and PLBs that only send a single message to a predetermined list of phone numbers or email addresses.
A GEOS agent will be able to monitor your situation and provide updates, staying in communication with you and your rescuers until they arrive. They will try to contact any contacts listed in your emergency contacts list, and may call or text them with information if they can't communicate directly.

If you'd like to test the SOS feature of your inReach device before you take it into the backcountry, we can arrange a Test Alert for you with IERCC. To request a Test Alert, submit an online form at least 72 hours before your desired alert time.Two-way satellite communicators such as inReach Mini 2 communicate with a reliable, worldwide network of Iridium(r) satellites. They offer seamless, 100% coverage across the globe. A subscription to the Iridium satellite network is required, but you can choose an annual package or a flexible month-to-month plan.
