What's the Big Deal With Minecraft?

It's hard to not notice the tall, ethereal being to your right as you ascend the Museum of Pop Culture’s central exhibit staircase. Do yourself a favor, and avoid looking directly into the violet eyes of the mysterious Enderman.

Venture farther up the steps and you'll come across another boxy creature that has more fashion. Steve, the pickaxe-wielding Steve wears a checkered top in various shades of blue over a pair denim bottoms. He greets visitors to the museum as he walks towards the digital world that's come to life at the top of MoPOP.

Each of these otherworldly encounters are intended to be the introduction to the museum's Minecraft exhibition, which was held its highly anticipated world premiere on October 19. The Enderman is a block-stealing teleportation-versed monster that is a threat to Minecraft players who make eye contact, and Steve, the first skin for players that's equal parts miner, crafter builder, survivor and miner are a small but recognizable portion of the Minecraft world which gamers have been able to recognize and enjoy.

Most likely, you've heard of Minecraft. The 10-year-old game defeated Tetris earlier this year to become the most played video game. This blog post is sure to have you interested in knowing more about Minecraft. To help you embark on your quest, here are five things for a Minecraft-curious individual to know:

1. A World Made of Blocks

In 2009, Minecraft was created by Mojang which is a Swedish video game development company later bought by Microsoft, Minecraft at its most basic level is a space comprised of blocks. In the 3D Minecraft world players are able to create whatever they like by breaking and placing those blocks. There's no standard path to take or rigid goals to guide you. Instead, players are allowed and encouraged to use their creativity to make the game whatever they like. Sounds simple enough, right? Read on.

2. Choose Your Playstyle Choose a style: Survival, Creative or Both

In Minecraft there are two main game modes: Survival and Creative.

Survival mode is all about survival. Players are placed in a new world where they must use its resources to build shelter and food, as well as make tools that can enable them to create the world they desire. In Survival mode, monsters, often referred to as mobs (Minecraft the term used to describe mobile non-player characters) are likely to be hostile towards you, look to steal your resources, or even attempt to kill you. It's up to you to stay alive.

In Creative mode players can build any building block available to them from the beginning. In this mode, you don't be worried about mobs lurking around to disrupt your imagination. It's an enormous sandbox or an endless supply of building blocks. You can build whatever you want by putting one block at a given time. From creating fantasy castles to re-creating structures from real life, Minecraft is a world with limitless possibilities.

3. More than a Game, Minecraft is a Community

In a game that allows such a wide range of creative possibilities, Minecraft's community of players has evolved into one of its most valuable resources when it comes to instructing and entertaining players both new and experienced. There was no instruction manual included when Minecraft first came out, and players used trial and trial and out on their own. As a result, the internet became a an avenue for Minecrafters to share their triumph stories.

"We created the game," says Mojang Chief Content Officer Vu Bui. Oc cities "The community was the main source of the game's popularity."

Today, platforms like YouTube and Twitch have become platforms for Minecraft celebrities to share content with their millions of followers. GoodTimesWithScar is a well-known Minecraft creator, was on site at MoPOP during the opening ceremony in mid-October.

4. The best Part? It's an educational experience!

The first and foremost is that Minecraft is a game, but it also doubles as an educational tool. Lessons in math, physics, geometry, and storytelling are rooted in the game's principles which is why educators have adopted Minecraft as an alternative way to conduct classroom activities. It was released in the year 2016. Minecraft: Education Edition offers lessons that are based on projects, which give students the opportunity to learn by working together on problems. For students, it could generate a deeper feeling of interest in learning. This allows teachers to be more aware of their students' preferences for learning.

5. It extends Beyond the Screen

Since its initial launch, Minecraft has inspired novels and comics, merchandise sales, and even new versions of the video game as players are able to modify Minecraft's inner workings to give it a unique style and appearance that is aligned with particular historical times and cultures or lifestyles. As Minecraft's following escalated it began to seep into other aspects of popular culture. You might have heard or seen references to Minecraft in your favorite television shows, music videos, movies and more.

After having digested the blog post to this point, hopefully it will make a bit more sense the next time you encounter Minecraft in the wild. Keep your eyes away from Enderman if you do come across them.
