Emergency First Aid - 5 Biggest Myths and Mistakes to Avoid
As an initial aid instructor and a specialist firefighter I get to see first hand how the public handles day-to-day emergencies in the home and work. As an initial aid instructor, I teach the public the skills to look after injuries in the home and work using the latest information. I sometimes take for granted that this knowledge is widespread and assume everybody knows how to proceed. Then of course, I react to a medical emergency from the fire station and realize that mistakes in first aid care are still being made. So, in this posting I am going to expose the most frequent mistakes and myths in medical treatment..

1. The care of minor wounds, scrapes and abrasions. The science has changed. We no longer use Hydrogen Peroxide. This mild antiseptic has been a staple in medical kits and a favorite of moms for a long time. Yet it can cause problems. The foremost is it generates an oxygen rich environment where bacteria can thrive. Second it damages capillaries and tissue, slowing down the healing process. As exciting since it would be to watch the bubbling action at the job, it is actually slowing the healing and not killing the germs.

Also one of them group is Rubbing Alcohol and alcohol wipes when used being an antiseptic on a wound also causes tissue and capillary damage, slowing the healing. Not to mention the pain alcohol causes on a wound site.

Another item to be removed from your medical kit is Butterfly bandages. These dressings tend to trap bacteria in the wound leading to septic infections.

The renewed method of cleaning a minor wound or abrasion has been good old-fashioned soap and water. Take a wash cloth and obtain it wet and soapy before gently scrubbing the wound. The soap acts a surfactant, wearing down waters surface tension, making the water wetter. This enables the water to penetrate into the wound and flush out debris and bacteria.

2. Ammonia Inhalants- Could cause allergic reactions and respiratory distress.

3. Syrup of Ipecac-Used during the past to induce vomiting, Inducing vomiting was included with the risk of ingesting acid and bacteria into the lungs causing respiratory ailments This has now been replaced with Activated Charcoal and is available at your local drug store.

4. Nose Bleeds- The most common mistake made here's after we pinch the nose, which way do we tilt the head? Forward or Backwards? The right answer is: Forward. You see, until those thin-walled capillaries in the nose clot, the nose will continue to drip blood. If you tilt your head backwards, that blood will run-down the back of throat and into the stomach. This will more than likely cause the victim to vomit up the blood. To stop the bleeding simply have the victim sit in a chair with a trash can with a liner between their knees while pinching right above the nostrils and leaning forward. The main element here is the victim or first aider must pinch the nose for at the very least five minutes.

5. Burn Treatment- No ice, it is too cold and causes more damage to the burn. No creams or greasy products, i.e. vaseline, butter, toothpaste, burn cream (not used in the cooling stage of burn treatment), all these things don't allow the burn to cool. This drives heat in deeper into the tissue, making the burn worse. They can also make the burn septic. And of course, no home remedies.

The best solution and advanced treatment is a burn gel product. We have used these products in the fire department for over eight years with amazing results. Advantages include; cools the burn faster than water without causing hypothermia to the victim, kills the pain, kills any infection, and best of all, the dressings usually do not adhere to the burn. So when https://squareblogs.net/areapush7/how-to-choose-the-very-best-emergency-medical-supplies is removed you will not cause any trauma to the burn

These are are just some of the more common first aid mistakes and myths.
