Avanos Medical, a U.S. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company, is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access system due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs which could have caused injuries and even death of patients. The recall affects 629 devices that are currently available in the United States.
Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos has marketed the Cortrak*2 Entraal Access System to help with the installation of a medical-feeding tube. Patients can suffer from injuries to their vocal chords or trachea, if the tube was inserted in a wrong way. Avanos Medical's recall notification states that as of 2015, there were 60 deaths of patients and 23 injuries resulting from the incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tube when using the CORTRAK*2 access system. The lungs fail, there is pneumothorax (collapsed lung tissue), perforation, (a hole in the esophagus or the bowel wall) pneumonia, excessive fluid that is accumulating between the lung and chest cavity (the chest cavity as well as the lungs) are all among the traumas.

Avanos was the second caution issued by the FDA in 2022 regarding the use of enteral nutrition tubes. In February, the FDA issued a warning for parents and healthcare providers regarding the risk of strangulation when children are fed via feeding tubes. Avanos Medical feeding tube Two deaths resulting from strangulation of children took place in 2021 because of tubes that were placed around the neck of a patient.
