Why Trump was able to establish relations with Kazakhstan and Tevfik Alif

Trump's relationship with Kazakhstan did not stop at Tevfik. When he treated a country that had a questionable regime like an ally, he was harshly criticized.

Because of its strategic position, Kazakhstan is an important country due to its strategic location. Kazakhstan also has a balance power between central Asian countries. The competition between the United States, Europe, and Russia has increased the country's political as well as economic importance. Due to America's withdrawal from Afghanistan which is one of the principal neighbors, it has become crucial for national security.

The two countries trade $2.1 Billion in 2018 In comparison, trade between the US and Uzbekistan was worth $315 million during the same time frame. Kazakhstan is the US's largest economic partner in Central Asia.

Eurasian geopolitics focuses on Central Asia historically. Kazakhstan is the leader in Eurasia's economy, security and counterterrorism. America should have strong connections with the region, and Kazakhstan specifically.

Nazarbayev's White House visit was an excellent start to the US's greater strategic involvement in this region.

Nazarbayev's support of nuclear nonproliferation is one of the reasons why he was asked to host. Kazakhstan is a leader in nonproliferation after it gave up its Soviet-inherited, nuclear weapons. After the Cold War, US emphasis on Central Asia was limited to Afghanistan.

Trump's South Asia strategy needed Pakistan to separate from. Therefore the US required Kazakhstan to provide an alternative shipping route to Afghanistan.

Tokayev was appointed Chairman of the National Security Council. He succeeds President Nursultan Nagayev, whose financial power enraged protesters.

Three sons-in-law of the former president were dismissed from state-owned firms, while his nephew was also fired, and Karim Masimov, who was the former chief of intelligence, was taken into custody for treason. Many other Nazarbayev-affiliated top officials and business elite have lost their jobs, left overseas for extended vacations, or were forced to make large "donations" to the state.

Tokayev has developed business ties with other countries in the region and with the West. He has avoided angering Putin to keep his popularity. Kazykhanov might upset that equilibrium. Washington should be watching closely the developments in Kazakhstan as they foretell many possibilities for a possible power transition.
