Union Pacific Houston Cancer - Is Creosote Still Affecting Houstonians?

Houston's Fifth Ward neighbors have complained for years that the company hasn’t done enough to clean the underground plume that was contaminated with rail yard. The latest tests have demonstrated that the contamination may be an issue for residents living nearby.

Researchers say it may be related to the elevated cancer rates in the area. Two years after the launch of an investigation into health issues across the state the researchers discovered that there were higher than expected rates of lymphoblastic cancer in children and adult kidney and pelvis cancers in the area surrounding the Union Pacific site.

Creosote


Creosote, a common chemical, is used in the treatment of wood. It can also cause cancer in those exposed to it.

It is a thick oily substance, amber to black in color. It has a smoky scent and a bitter taste. It is a coal tar distillation product and has been used for over 150 years as an ingredient in wood preservative.

It is used in the United States to treat railroad ties, and other types woods, including fence posts and utility poles, as well as pilings for marine use. It can also be employed to protect log homes and other structures from insect infestation.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states creosote is an extremely hazardous chemical. In the event of exposure to creosote for a short periods can cause skin and eye irritation, chemical burns, stomach pains, burning of mouth or throat, kidney or liver problems, and even permanent damage.

Exposure for long periods can lead to skin and scrotum cancer. Workers who come into direct contact with it during wood treatment and other manufacturing processes are at risk.

It is considered a probable human carcinogen as per the EPA. It has been linked to a number kinds of cancers such as esophageal or lung cancer.

Residents of Houston's Fifth Ward neighborhood have been exposed to creosote for a long time due to the former rail yard that was located near their homes. They claim the chemical has caused soil and homes to be contaminated and continues to spread throughout the underground.

The cities of Houston and Harris County have joined the campaign to sue Union Pacific in federal court. They demand that the company test for contamination regularly and adopt preventative measures to stop the spread.

A group of Fifth Ward neighbors filed an action against Union Pacific in October of 2017. They claim that creosote has contaminated their soil and caused major health problems from the former rail yard.

They are seeking compensation for their illness and suffering and also damages from the railroad to cover the cost of cleaning and other costs. They also claim that they are affected by environmental racism and discrimination as well as other forms of pollution that have affected their families and themselves.

Dioxin

A recent study conducted by the Department of State Health Services found that children in the Fifth Ward and Kashmere Garden neighborhoods contracted a type of leukemia at a five-fold higher rate than the average. The study also found that adult cancers were more prevalent in the neighborhoods than elsewhere in Texas.
