Minecraft Developers Won't Allow NFTs on The Gaming Platform

Minecraft will not allow non-fungible tokens (NFTs) to be used on the game platform The company has described them as antithetical to Minecraft's "values of creative inclusion and playing together".

NFTs grant ownership of an exclusive digital item. This can be an image or video. The ownership is stored on a decentralised digital registry known as Blockchain.

Digital files can be copied and deleted free of charge, but the NFT is used to identify the owner of the original file. This is usually for cryptocurrency.

The excitement surrounding NFTs resulted in a surge in sales that reached a peak of US$12 billion (AU$17.4bn) globally in January. However, in line with the decline in cryptocurrency, sales dropped to an all-time low of US$1bn (AU$1.45bn) in June.

Minecraft allows users to create whole virtual worlds. It is extremely customizable. Minecraft has been in existence for more than 10 years and has a large community of users who create skins mods, maps, and skins.

NFTs were able to see Minecraft as a promising market, with an estimated number of users in excess of 140,000,000 by the end of August 2021. They're already sharing digital items made for the game.

Mojang is the Microsoft-owned development studio that developed Minecraft has ended speculation that NFTs could be permitted in the game. Mojang's developers said that blockchain technology was not permitted in Minecraft, stating that it was incompatible with Minecraft's core values.

The company claimed that each of these uses of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates a digital owner based on scarcity and exclusion, which isn't in line with Minecraft values of creative inclusion.

"NFTs don't include all members of our community and create a stalemate of the haves and not-so-haves. The speculation about prices and investment mindset about NFTs take the focus away from the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is not in line with the long-term enjoyment and the success of our players."

Mojang claimed that the games in Minecraft had intrinsic value , and there were instances where NFTs were sold at artificially or fraudulently overinflated prices.

The studio said it was concerned that third-party NFTs could not be reliable and could end up costing players. It also stated that it was concerned the implementation of Minecraft that is entirely based on blockchain technology could disappear without notice, meaning players could lose their money.

This is referred to in crypto as a "rug pull" which is when the developers behind a crypto-related project close down the project and make profit from the proceeds. Blockverse is which is a third-party Minecraft project, is believed to be an example of this. PC Gamer reported that the project was canceled in January, after more than US$1m (AU$1.45m) was invested.

Mojang left the option of using "more secure" blockchain technology in Minecraft in the near future, but said it did not have plans to allow it currently.

One group working on NFTs in Minecraft claimed that the move was an "step backwards" in the field of innovation, and that they would need change to a different gaming platform if they were banned.

Roblox Another game of great popularity which allows you to buy items in-game, is not yet announcing a position on NFTs. Craig Donato, chief business officer of the company, stated to VentureBeat that he didn't find any reason why the game wouldn't allow NFTs and that it was merely a matter of when.

Other gaming companies like Square Enix and Ubisoft are also experimenting with NFTs. This week Square Enix announced that for the 25th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII next year people would be able to buy physical trading cards with digital versions, referred to as NFTs.
