Intragastric Balloon
An intragastric balloon, also known as a gastric balloon, is an inflatable medical device. It is used to help people lose weight if diet and exercise have not been successful. However, the procedure is not for everyone. In many cases, patients may not be a good candidate for the procedure because they do not want to undergo surgery.
Weight loss mechanism

The intragastric balloon is a new treatment option that can be used to reduce weight in patients with excess stomach fat. It is considered a less invasive alternative to bariatric surgery but can be a temporary solution. While bariatric surgery is effective for treating obesity, it comes with several risks and complications. Intragastric balloons are promising alternatives that can be used with lifestyle modification and pharmacotherapy. These treatments are becoming a valuable bridging therapy for patients who are overweight or obese and cannot undergo traditional surgery.

The ORBERA(tm) Intragastric balloon system is an endoscopically implantable balloon that occupies the stomach's empty space to help a person feel full. The balloon, filled with salt water, is placed in the stomach and can stay in place for up to a year. It is expected to help patients lose up to 45.8% of their excess body weight over the first year after surgery.
Complications

Intragastric balloon complications can range from mild to severe and are not uncommon. The patient should be monitored for symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, back pain, difficulty breathing, fever, and rapid heartbeat. Some patients also experience vomiting, which is often the result of too much food or introducing new food items too quickly. The patient should also be aware of changes in his or her food tolerance and monitor these changes carefully. Vomiting may also be related to indigestion and can be treated with specific anti-reflux medications.

One case report describes a patient who suffered from acute pancreatitis three months after the procedure. The patient was previously asymptomatic but experienced severe abdominal pain. He had a pulse rate of 120 beats per minute, a respiratory rate of 22/min, and a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius. He was referred to a healthcare center when his symptoms increased over the next two days and he refused to eat. An abdominal CT scan revealed a foreign body in the duodenum. An esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed that the balloon had become impacted in the second part of the duodenum. He was able to tolerate his medication and regain his health.
Contraindications

Contraindications of intragastric balloon include gastric ulcer, pancreatitis, and bowel obstruction. Some of these complications can be severe and require abdominal surgery. You should consult your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms occur. If you are considering an intragastric balloon, you should review all possible risks and benefits.

You should have a complete medical history before undergoing intragastric balloon therapy. Your physician should also perform a thorough physical exam, focusing on gastrointestinal disorders. Some of these are absolute contraindications, such as previous gastric surgery, severe liver disease, or upper gastrointestinal bleeding lesions. Psychiatric disorders, including alcoholism and drug addiction, can also be considered contraindications.
Obalon

An Obalon intragastric balloon is a small, gastric balloon that is inserted through a micro-catheter. The balloon itself is the size of a vitamin pill, but is inflated using gas through the catheter. This treatment is relatively safe and typically takes 10 minutes to complete. Patients are awake throughout the procedure, and there is no need for sedation or general anesthesia.

People who are obese or who are unable to lose weight through dieting should consult with a physician to see if Obalon is a good option for them. This procedure may not be suitable for patients with a history of stomach disorders, as they may have trouble swallowing the balloon or capsule. In addition, those who suffer from certain medications, such as proton pump inhibitors, should not undergo the procedure.
Orbera

The ORBERA intragastric balloon is a weight loss device that can remain in the stomach for up to six months. The patient can remove the balloon at any point during that time. The device can help patients lose up to three times as much weight as diet and exercise alone. It also helps them control portions. After the balloon is placed, patients receive counseling and support from a team of doctors.

The procedure involves inserting an inflatable silicone balloon into the patient's stomach. Once the balloon is in place, it takes up space in the stomach and encourages patients to eat healthier portions. The patient then begins a gradual diet plan. The diet should be based on the recommendations of a dietitian. Patients are encouraged to exercise regularly as well.
