Different Venues Cause Different Styles of Reading - Newspaper, Books, eBooks, Online Articles
Most those people who are reading books sit back with a cup of coffee or find a nice comfortable seat and begin reading a way, drifting in to the storyline or soaking in the information. They aren't in virtually any hurry to go anywhere or do anything. This is not the same for online readers - often they're clicking away 12 seconds per page, consuming information as fast as they can and going through the deluge of information in rapid succession.

Okay so, knowing this, and knowing how you read yourself when you are online, and when you are not, how will you take these details and help it last as an online author?

It just so happens there was an interesting article in "Read Write Web" titled; "Best Practices for Writing For Online Readers," by Dave Copeland posted on March 16, 2012. In this post Dave explains he's got done quite a bit of research on online readers. He stated that whenever reading in this venue folks do a lot more scanning than actual reading, and even though they are reading, not in the manner that we are accustomed too. Therefore online writers have to take this under consideration, pay attention, and adapt for the brand new audience and venue. Okay so, let's discuss this for second shall we?

I wish that online readers browse the same way as those that read books and magazines. In the end, when I begun to write it was within an era where the Internet had not been so pervasive. Today everything is online, our news stories, magazine articles, and all of the books are now rewritten, or re-formatted into e-books. Indeed, I'm uncertain if you've noticed this or not, but I have because I do like to browse the physical newspaper, but I also scan the news headlines online. I've often read articles online without quite definitely information, albeit the pertinent facts of the article, then I read the physical newspaper, and the same story is much more comprehensive with several hundred words besides what was online. Why do you consider this is? Well, I'd submit to you that it's for exactly the same reason that Dave Copeland above explained in his article.

As an online article author with now over 26,000 articles under my belt, I feel like I am an incident study in and of myself in the world of online article writing. Yes, I made lots of mistakes along the way, but I've learned a whole lot, and have a significant level of knowledge now in judging how online readers ingest their information - what turns them on, and what instantly turns them off. It is not what you think, and it is completely different from everything that they taught you in composition class while you were in school. Indeed I hope you will please consider all of this and think onto it.
